Grasscutting Service?

My Husband cuts and strims all our families grass and does so for free however he was considering doing this over the summer for local neighbours etc for a small fee. He is not a professional and therefore is not sure how much to charge. I am printing some flyers - can anyone advise what is a reasonable amount that people would expect to pay? Thanks in advance.

Well to some extent, surely the size of the garden would play a part in some way? I mean if it was a 2 acre garden, it would take more time than if it was 2 metres square or something like that.

Maybe if you said something like £5 an hour or something? That may be a little low though, I'm not sure entirely.

It would depend on the area, and the people.

Why not try to find grass cutters in your area and see what they are charging. Also check what they are offering, do they bring their own mower, do they trim the edges, take the grass away or leave it for the owner to dispose of?

I have someone cut my grass small front lawn with small hedge and a medium back lawn, he puts cuttings in my green bin probably takes 30-40 mins and I pay him £10. I think its £10 well spent it would take me 2-3 hours

used to do lawn service 15 yrs ago charged £10 small and oap, £15 - £20 for the rest and cut round boarders, garden clear up £60 + used petrol equipment, and paperwork signed by house holder allowing acess to property if their out, (for police).
you better get insurance as a smashed window will cost a bit to fix if using a strimmer, kicks up stones. disinfect your mower if you do a scruffy weedy lawn stops transfer of weeds.
by law as your a garden contractor its your responsiability to remove cuttings ( not put in garden bins)
when you chat to customers find out what they do if your not going to declare income alot of business oweners will ask for vat recipt .

Estate agencies manage rental properties and will allways be happy to recive a quote for a cut all in. and they like to present lawns on sale house viewings on bigger properties
  • I have a bloke that cuts my grass once a fortnight for me, I work full time so I'm happy to save myself a chore. It takes him roughly 20 mins as I only have a small lawn front and back, he strims the edges as well and puts the cuttings into my grass bin. He charges me £12 a fortnight. If I have any rubbish that needs taking to the skip he'll do that as well for an extra charge so he does come in very handy.

Hedge trimming is also a good money earner if you are doing grass cutting. An electric trimmer and a power reel and that's it.

Pick wealthy areas where women will be at home, look for the overgrown hedges. You can bet they have been nagging the men folk for weeks to cut the hedge and then someone turns up offering to do it there and then. Plenty of money to be made.

Thanks for the replies. Still a bit confused as to what to put on the flyer. hourly rate or set flat fee? Some gardens may be smaller than others therefore if put hourly rate of £9-10 and its done in 30 mins would the person then only have to pay half of that? Or is he better just to charge £10-12 per garden? Thanks for the advice.

In your original post you say your husband is going to offer this service to neighbours. Therefore you already know the size of the gardens in your neighbourhood. Will there really be such a big variation as to make a difference?

Why not put "Prices from £10" or "Prices start at £10" or just put "Competitive pricing"

I wouldnt charge per hour....charge per job!

An average lawn I would be willing to pay £7-£10...if bigger, then slightly more.

It's the OP's time and he is providing a service for his customers. He has experiance and knows what he's doing, so charge the going rate. We pay a gardener £10ph.
