a kettle does use a lot of electricty, ive just fitted my free npower monitor and its been a revealtion

    I suppose it was "revealtion"................

My kettle is rated at 3kW, so when it is in use it does use a lot of electricity. However it takes 75 secs to boil 0.5L of water.
If a kWh costs 12p, that means it costs exactly 0.75p to make a cup of tea or coffee - hardly bank breaking !
I'm afraid you wasted your money on the Thermos - unless you like luke warm tea.

Those electricity monitors are really pointless. To anyone who has any understanding of electricity they are not needed: to anyone who hasn't a clue about electricity they are grossly misleading.

    Totally agree!

It is an even bigger problem for those who don't understand the concept of a thermostat.

This particularly applies heating water with an immersion heater. Their logic seems to be that it is a 3kW heater that, when they switch it on, indicates on their monitor it uses, say, 36p an hour.

So having it on for 30 mins costs 18p(and that provides sufficient hot water for their needs). Therefore if you have it on for 4 hours it uses £1.44 and left on 24/7 must use 24 x 36p = £8.64!!

If you think that is far fetched, just read the posts from people who state electricity bills of hundreds of pounds are because "you leave your immersion heater on far too long."

I got a moderately used dualit for £15 a car boot! It's a basic model but appears to be built like a tank and has been going strong for two years thus far.
IME toasters tend to last a very long time (unlike kettles!). Our cheapo one must be at least 15 years old now, and will probably last another 15.
