The only connection I can find is they are all the capitals of their respective countries but are only the second largest cities.
Seems a bit weak, but could be the answer?

The only connection I can find is the fact that they are the second largest cities as well.

not sure if i'm digging a little bit deep but could the answer be that they have all at some time or other been occupied by the french (French Rule)

Hanoi was occupied by the French in 1873

Split had a brief period of Napoleonic rule (1806–1813

Yaounde was founded in 1888 by German traders as a base for the ivory trade and an agricultural research station. It was occupied by Belgian troops during World War I. After Germany's defeat, France became the colonial power in eastern Cameroon. Yaound! became the capital of French Cameroon, and continues today as the capital of the Republic of Cameroon.

I did think the same! Even looked at French speaking cities to double check as it were - but - like you - wondered if I was digging too deep.:o Fascinating reading the history tho! Suppose it's anyone's guess what they are looking for. Good luck to all. :) xx

PS - I may put both answers in one email covering everything!! ;) :rotfl:
