Is SPF always necessary?

I'm just wondering if SPF in moisturisers and make up is necessary all the time.
Years ago no products ever contained sunscreen and no one worried, just used sun lotion when sunbathing and that was it, no one used it all the time in just general day to day use.
The foundation I like doesn't have an SPF, nor does the moisturiser is normally use. Do I have to use something different just for the SPF and no doubt will cost more anyway?

I believe all you need is a decent SPF, forget all the fandangle creams. I use Clinique City Block SPF25 a little goes along way too http://www.clinique.co.uk/product/1661/5861/Sun/Sun-Protection/City-Block-Sheer-SPF-25/index.tmpl0

I forgot to say I'm going to buy this for the summer, I read a really good review on it by Paula Begoun http://www.clinique.co.uk/product/1661/6440/Sun/Sun-Protection/Face-and-Body-Cream-SPF15/index.tmpl0

SPF is not essential, but it does help prevent early wrinkles and skin cancer. Its your choice.
Just remember skin products with SPF in them are not normaly worth the effort- you need a shot glass full for your face and neck, are you seriously going to use a shot glass full of foundation on your face and neck each day? if so its gonna cost you!
Products like the Boots N0.7 SPF facial cream explain that in the bottle there are 20 applications, you must also remember to reapply to keep the benefit and trying to keep out of the sun when its at its peak (10am-3pm) is also a good idea. You don't see the wrinkles it causes until its too late.0
