National security check?

Im currently looking for another job and one Ive applied for is with a well known art gallery, just in the catering department :rotfl: and if im successful it requires that I am security vetted, to gain security clearence, does anybody know what this involves? who does it? who long does it take?

Did they say what kind of security clearance it'd be? It might just be a simple background/criminal record check, in which case they'll just want previous employers and addresses, they'll check up on those as well as looking into any criminal records.

Depending on the location, you might also need a Counter Terrorist Check (CTC), which is a bit more involved, you'll need to give information about your family and partner, as well as having a brief one to one interview (mostly just to clarify any points on the application).

A copy of the CTC questionnaire is available at http://www.mod.uk/NR/rdonlyres/64DC1CE6-22E6-47E6-979D-D873539DF52A/0/SCCTC.pdf

I doubt you'd need MOD clearance to work in an art gallery so it's probably going to be a CRB check. On the other hand, if you do need SC then the form I filled in for CTC security check was daunting at first, you have to detail almost everything but it's not too bad as long as you have all your family info. It took about 3 or 4 weeks for mine to get processed if I can recall.

Ive only had an initial meeting with the head of the department, to see if I meet some requirements of the job, I have a 'proper' interview next week.

He didnt go in to too much detail about the security checks but said that it would involve a criminal record check and a credit check and a few other things that will be discussed when I have my interview, its the few other things that i'm concerned about.

I know I will pass on the criminal record check, the credit check will come back lets say chequered but nothing too bad some missed payments, a few K's worth of debt left to pay, if the other things are just like the things in that link then I should be fine.

How far do they look in to references? A couple of my past employers are no longer with the companies I worked for.
