Can't have hot water without heating?!

Hi there

Wondering if someone could shed some light? We moved into our new house last December and have been trying to suss out the heating and how to use the digital thermostat and panel etc. Whatever we do, we can't seem to turn off the heating. Even when the panel near the boiler shows the light on for the hot water and the light off for the heating, the rads are on full blast so we have to turn off the hot water? I will be calling a heating/plumbing type person out but wondered if anyone could help?

Thanks

My boiler does that... but I thought it only happened on older gravity systems.

If the boiler is fairly new I would suspect a fault.

Does it have a three way motorised valve? If it doesn't it is most likely a gravity hot water system. Despite what it says on the programmer, you can't run the water on its own.

Mine is the same. In the summer the boiler gets switched off and we use the immersion heater instead.

Can you not turn your rads off individually to stop them getting hot. We have to do this but it works fine.

apparently not. Not all the rads have valves and the ones that do, leak!

chances are the motorised valve is faulty or seized stuck on an "open" position in which water is allowed to flow both ways.

Our valve was leaking when we first moved in and managed to get it replaced for £70

I know the feeling about leaking rad valves/pipes - had our fair share of them when we moved in... hopfully we have sorted out more or less every valve in the house now one way or another! One thing ive learnt - before playing - ensure you have a replacment BEFORE starting any digging. Even if you dont use them, they are handy for later use!

Well, plumber replaced the motorised 'unit' for £120  but rads still come on so he is draining the system and replacing the valve that the motor fits to for another £60
