in Cutting tax
Last summer the company where I worked shut down the building although they are still trading. Now I have a new job.
Out of sheer curiosity I want to see if I'm entitled to rebate.
So do I phone the tax office for the new job, old job or both?

You contact the tax office dealing with your present employer as your tax records follow you around.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

New job.
But if you had a P45 and passed that onto a new employer prior to 5th April 2010 ............. that should have ensured your overall tax for the year was correct. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
If I tell them I've paid emergengy tax in my new job, would they help sort that out aswell or is that a HR/ wage department thing?0

Depends when that is from. But broadly it's HMRC if you've completed a P46 .............. HR, in order to get that sorted, otherwise. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

With the new PAYE computer system which was launched last June you can call any tax office and they will be able to deal with your query. HMRC taxes helplines are "virtual" now and even if you call Lothians helpline number (for example) your call could be picked up by another contact centre in another part of the country. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Is it the same for writing to your tax office or do you have to write to the one corresponding to your employer reference?0 -

Write to the one corresponding to your main source (if you have more than 1) at the moment. However, as an example, post for Belfast area is currently being worked in Edinburgh so there are changes being made to how/where post is being dealt with too. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Thanks, I understand which one I should write to but I was wondering how important it is - ie what happens if you send the letter to the wrong tax office, does it still get dealt with?
Lots of people just write to their local one rather than the one their employer uses.0
