LED Domestic Use Bulbs

Hi,

I'm looking to get some top quality LED bulbs for my home. I have done my research and from what i see the websites and manufacturers are not always being honest about the output and performance of the bulbs.

The bulbs seem to come in warm white and a bright white. The performance of these bulbs seems to change quite a lot depending on which color you choose.

I saw a site where they claimed a 7w LED would replace a 60w Incandescent bulb. While this was true with the Bright white bulb, it didn't seem to be true when you look at the lumens output of the warm white. The warm white being the bulb i want for my home as it creates a better ambiance.

It would seem i need to find a warm white LED bulb that is 8w or more to directly replace a 60w standard bulb.

Would anyone know where i can get one this type of bulb? I e-mailed the website i found selling bulbs with some questions and got a very strange response and no answer to my questions. Not very helpful at all.

Thank you

Chris

    Hi,

I use Deltech branded GU10s in my hallway at home.

They only use 5 watts of light, but look brilliant.

As they are expensive I only have two right now, in a three bar GU10 fitting, but the light output is pretty much identical to the standard GU10 bulb!

I am aware these are GU10s and, maybe not what you are looking for but hoped this might help.

Thanks for that, i have already bought some LED GU10's but they are not very good. So might have a look at those you have recomended.

Its specifically a replacement for 2 60W incandescent bulbs i am looking for in Warm White. I'm struggling to find anything.

I think you are being just a little unkind here when you accuse the manufacturers of dishonesty.

What you describe happens with all types of bulb. A conventional incandescent "pearl" bulb will produce less light than a clear one even though they might both be rated at 100W. That is simple physics - not dishonesty.
I would expect a "warm" light, of any type, to probably be less efficient that a "daylight" - but that would depend on the technology being used - it could actually be the other way round !

Apart from which, you appear to have found both Wattage figures and Lumen figures to be freely available - what is dishonest about that ? The manufacturer appears to have done his utmost to meet the needs of someone like you - and you criticise him !

I don't think i'm being 'unkind' in anyway. There are LED companies out there suggesting that certain LED bulbs they are selling are direct replacements for say a 60w incandescent, when there own figures show otherwise. I don't think this is helpful and a marketing ploy to convince people to buy a bulb that won't actually do the job the marketing has suggested it will. I don't like this and have a right to call it dis-honest and certainly misleading.

A website i would rather not name after having had less then satisfactory communication with them, states their 7W, warm white LED bulb that produces 450 lumens is a direct replacement for a 60w incandescent bulb that produces around 800 lumens. My problem with this is that this site has another bulb, a 9.5w bulb that produces 580 Lumens in warm white.

So why claim the 7w bulb is the replacement when its very clearly the 9.5w that comes far closer?

The other reason i claim that manufacturers are misleading people with figures about their bulbs is based on me buying some GU10 spot lights for my kitchen, which they claimed were a direct replacement for my halogen and they came nowhere near. Honestly, the product was pathetic.

LED bulbs are very expensive. There seems to be a lot of rubbish products on the market and there seem to be a lot of manufacturers and retailers keen to over-egg the output of there bulbs. As a customer, i feel i'm being completely mis-lead and am very close to giving up on LED as i simply don't understand it or trust the retailers.

The manufacturers are doing nothing to help the likes of me as none of them explain their stats. Whats more important, Lux or Lumens? How does beam angle effect the light? How are these bulbs tested for their lumens output or their life span? I have read articles online that totally contradict each other when it comes to how best to determine the quality of light produced by an LED. I'm starting to think the retailers don't know this info.

Lumens is the measure of light output so would be more important.

Most people want to know what power they are using so they can measure exactly how money they are saving.

Lumens, however, is the correct way to measure the light output.
You are entitled to your opinion Batterseaguy, I dont think you are being unkind at all!

You are right in saying there are a lot of rubbish LED products about. I have seen comments regarding items on show in B&Q that are not up to scratch. The Deltechs mentioned above though are a fantastic product.

If you would prefer a guaranteed LED product it would be better for you to use a respected manufacturer. Sylvania, Philips and Megaman all offer a LED range now!

Take a look at the range here where i bought the above bulbs. Traditionally LEDs are used in bars and pubs. Read the descriptions to see exactly which ones can be used to light up your home - http://www.lamps2udirect.com/pages/browse-Lamps2udirect.php/led_light_bulbs/12
