I would say yes a bag of bread flour is about 50p on average and I get 3 to 4 loves or batches of dough for rolls out of 1 bag the yeast is about 50p for 6 sachets as well and that would do 6 to 7 loaves depending on the machine or recipie the only other things it uses or a bit of oil or butter sugar and salt so for 15p to 20p you get a loaf of fresh homemade bread can't beat it as far as I'm concerned

  • Don't forget that it is cost effective to hand bake your bread too. The fuel cost may or may not be less with a bm, but you can bake several loaves at once in the oven. Store them in the freezer.

Whether you use a bm or the oven it is cheaper to make your own and the quality is way better ;)

    Hi Pigpen,

I've only recently got my first breadmaker and I would say definitely yes. I am making a least a loaf a day and the taste is far superior to the shop bought bread I was buying.

We have another thread on this subject that should help you:

    Bread Maker - worth it?

I'll merge your thread with it later as it helps to keep all the suggestions together.

Edit: I just came across another couple of threads that might interest you:

    Are breadmakers really money saving??

If you look a the sell by date of shop bread this will tell you what additives are in to keep it fresh... days, sometimes weeks  Home made bread is stale couple of days....well it would be if there was any left:D

Absolutely! We use our Panasonic every other day and very rarely buy bread. When we do we can't stop comenting on how bland and tasteless it is and how many preservatives etc it contains. We reckon its approx 50p a loaf and so cost effective too!

    Pigpen,

If you have no luck on freecycle, take a look at this thread where you'll see how to get the Morphy Richards fastbake that we've all been getting excited about here for £14.50.

  • My bread-maker is fab. You can use it for cakes, jam and pizza dough as well.

I've often wondered this, thanks. :) Is it only cost effective in an oven if you make a whole batch?
