£6475 tax allowance...

Not sure if I have the right thread but I'll give it a go!!

from what I understand the first £6000 is the amount you are allowed to earn before being taxed..

Last year (May 2009) I worked in an office for 3 months, during this time I was taxed around £840 and was on an emergency tax code.

I made less than £6000 in the year.

Does this mean I am entitled to get the £840 back? and if so how would I do this? any help would be much appreciated!

    are you working now ?

i'm pretty certain that when your new job started and got your tax code sorted out then you will (or should have) received a tax rebate in your pay

forgot to mention that I was holding another job at the time (which cud explain emergency tax code) with a waiting agency, still work for them but haven't received a rebate..

my total income for last yr didnt come to 6,000 pounds however..

does this mean i am eligible for a full return?

Your tax code is for the year 2010/11. You are allowed to earn £6475 before paying tax. Anything over this is taxed 20%. Your best option to get accurate details would be to phone the tax people at 08453003949 with you national insurance number and get them to explain your options.
  • It sounds like your allowances for the Year were offset against your main income and the 2nd job taxed at BR which would be correct, However if your total income for the year from both job was less than £6475 then yes you would be due a tax refund you need Form P50 from HMRC (downloadable from HMRC website) and your P60 from main employment and P45 from the second job
