Not sure if I have the right thread but I'll give it a go!!
from what I understand the first £6000 is the amount you are allowed to earn before being taxed..
Last year (May 2009) I worked in an office for 3 months, during this time I was taxed around £840 and was on an emergency tax code.
I made less than £6000 in the year.
Does this mean I am entitled to get the £840 back? and if so how would I do this? any help would be much appreciated!

Was that your only income in the tax year (6 April 2009 - 5 April 2010)? If so you will get all the tax back, just a case of writing to the tax office and confirming this was your only income.0

Taken from the HMRC website Pay As You Earn (PAYE) see page 4.
Thresholds
The PAYE thresholds (the level of earnings at which tax becomes payable) are: £125.00 weekly £540.00 monthly
Your £2K per month / £500 per week are way over these figures, which is why you were taxed on an emergency code. I'd take BoGoF's advice and contct the tax office to inform them.0 -
Tell me about it...
Forgot to mention that i had another job at the time, which could explain why I was put on emergency tax code..
nevertheless I still didn't earn more than 6,000 for that year as I embarked on travelling after August..
Hopefully I will be able to reclaim the amount in full..and will contact HM Revenues and customs ASAP!0 -
Thank you for clearing that up!0

If you've earned under the tax threshold for the year then yes, you're entitled to the full amount back.Bought, not Brought0

As Bamber has posted above me, I can confirm this too. It happened to me in the 08-09 tax year and I got all the tax back I'd paidSealed Pot Challenge Member 1216 -

There is nothing nicer than a tax rebate

Makes you feel that you have won - just a little bit, but a win nonetheless.0
