Getting a new central heating system installed

Hi, hope someone can help..

We have central heating installed currently but it's a quite old system..it just has a dial to control the temp, so if we want hot water we have to have the heating on as well.

We'd like to get a more updated system where we can select heat OR hot water, or both.

Has anyone had this done or can anyone give me an idea of the price?

Thanks :)

    Hi there,

We had the exact same problem as you last year, and had two quotes for providing a new programmer, replacing the hot water cylinder, installing a new valve, new radiator TRV's and hall thermostat on our existing oil fired system. Each quote came to around the £2k mark  Not cheap!!

In the end we got Phoenix gas installed, new combi boiler, digital programmer and hall thermostat, TRV's on all other rads, removal of the old oil tank, hot water tank, cold water tanks etc. for about £2.3k.

Depending on the age of your existing boiler, changing to gas (I assume you are on an old oil fired system based on your description) might be a viable option.

yes its possible, i did this about 6 years ago, if the dial to put on the heating is close by its easier.

basically at the central heating end there is 2 electrical devices, one heating and the other the pump. (i believe! someone correct me if im wrong)

Central Heating heats the hot water & the pump, pumps round the hot water around the radiators.

I got a local electrician to wire it up and been happy every since.

As for costs i would expect no more than a few hours work for additional cabling (from timer to central heater and from timer to pump)

It depends on the layout of your system and what you already have but i've updated systems for £250. That is the cheapest though. They've been fully pumped systems with manual three port valves or thermostatic valves on the cylinder. Becareful though you could be opening up a can of worms. There may be a lot more work needs doing. If it's that old your boiler may need changing.
