Money making & saving musts!

I was just wondering if anybody has any moneymaking or saving things that they do that as so important, yet nobody ever seems to get around to doing or is simply unaware of?

a very basic example being something like...

'I cant believe people still keep their savings in a 2% interest earning bank account'

Cheers,
Spare.

Yes, I use every money saving tip I ever hear or read about. I chase the best rate for savings, current account and ISAs. Use discount brokers to buy equity ISAs. Use Primus for telephone calls - 4p to Spain and Australia and coppers to anyone in UK. I use a money back credit card that charges nothing if I make a transaction abroad which I do every year when paying hotel bills (Nationwide). Buying Euros I use M & S on line, get the best rate and delivered to the door free if you use their card and buy £500 worth.
Just bought a printer on line from Comet because they discount on line sales.
etc etc AND I have discovered these forums so before I pop off I might become a millionaire.

Presume that's per min: it's 1p/min with 18185 for those 2 countries, and 4p/call (no matter how long it lasts) in the UK.

Yes it is, so now I will have to investigate 18185 whoever they are!
  • On the day before pay day I transfer any balance in my current account into my ISA or savings account. That way (a) I don't spend it and (b) it gets a better rate of interest.

This is much easier now we have Internet banking. I wouldn't have bothered going to the bank to do it.

I can't believe people don't use the 'accumulator principle'. So that coffee which cost £2 per working day (not much you think) adds up to somewhere between £400 and £500 per year.... quite a lot!

I too always think annually when calculating savings. If their is a really good bargain on any product we regually buy{e.g toilet rolls},I will roughly calculate how many of these items we would need to last till the end of the year and buy that many.Over the year it can save £300/400 pounds..when you start thinking annually you can then say, that £300 i saved has paid for my car tax disc/water rates /etc..this year. Also clicking on these freebie sites for about 20 minutes each day{like mutual points/quidco/freefivers etc}doesnt cost you a penny ,but the pennies you get each day soon mount up for example clicking on kelko and others on shopping rewards I get 18p per day{5mins work} which x 365 days = £65.70{tax free}.I have had cheques and vouchers totalling over £150 month this month alone, and am expecting £80 again next month, and with the odd few surveys I do as well,I am expecting to receive well over £500 this year, without paying a penny. And its nice having a collection of vouchers to spend at christmas. This year I will have £90 debenhams/£100 john lewis/£30 boots/£30 tesco/£10 ikea/£20 amazon, and probably a few more..

Always check if there is cashback available on Quidco or other similar sites before buying or applying for anything online (including credit cards, insurance etc.).
  • I can't believe that people get their car out for short journeys, when walking or cycling would be equally feasible, and often quicker.
