Only lived/worked in the UK from Sept-now

Options
Hi all,

This is my first ever post, so apologies if this has already been asked on here.

I started a job and moved to the UK in Sept 2009. Would this mean that I could potentially claim any tax back seeing as my income would be lower than normal for the tax-year? How can I find this out?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

was what your taxcode for the year ending april 2010?
it will be on your pay slip?
and/or post up your gross earning for the year and the tax you paid

    Thanks.

According to my P60, the tax code is 647L and the gross earnings were 18k.

    647L is the standard taxcode

on £18,000 you should have paid about 2300 in tax (and some more in national insurance)

These numbers assume the individual is paying tax on the arising basis which is unusual for a non-dom in the first 7 years of residence.

yes that's about how much I paid in tax. But I'm not sure I understand what the arising basis stuff means?

    thanks.

Not sure what Cook County is getting at but you seemed to have paid the correct amount of tax if you're earnings since arising in the UK were £18k

However, this ex-taxman smells a rat.
Martianman’s posts on here seem to be entirely correct in spelling and grammar.
In my personal experience both as a taxman and a contributor here, that is incredibly rare.
Martianman may well have simplified his personal history thinking it does not matter but it does.

Why? Everything Martianman said exactly describes my situation, except I earned slightly less than 18k between September and the end of the tax year.
