Blackberries & eating apples

I can't wait for the blackberries around here to ripen. They're still tiny, hard and green with a lot still in flower. Will be another couple of weeks or so before they're ready.0

I went out today and came back with very few. Maybe too early but we are in the south east. Lots of the bushes looked sick, brown leaves like a virus which was on the fruit as well. I'll try another location in 10 daysThe birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0

Went out a couple of days ago and came back with another 4lbs or so. Made blackberry curd which is to die for - I love fruit curds - and also showed DD how to cook over a bain marie type affair. A few went into an apple and blackberry crumble for DH last night, after he complained that I'd made wine and jelly/curd so far and he doesn't drink and doesn't like jam! We didn't even manage half of it, so the rest will be tonight's pud (and maybe tomorrow too!).
I still have about 2lbs stashed away in the freezer, and that will be more apple and blackberry jelly once I get some more jars, as DH has negotiated a swap at work for some raspberry jam from someone who has a raspberry glut.
Will go out and get some more in another few days - for supposedly "free" food it's probably costing me a fortune in sugar and fuel!0 -
Is that made the same way as lemon curd? It sounds nice and I'd like to give it a try.
Yeah, pretty much, got the recipe here

I did 1/3 quantities as I only had enough jars for that much!0 -

I went on a walk on tuesday and on my way back found an apple tree and picked some blackberries and got some free apples but i want to know what to do with them in regards as to cleaning them as i have never got them before and would like to make a noice crumble or pie.

My mum always used to chuck 'em in a sink of water to which she added a tablespoon of salt - the idea being that this killed any wildlife. She'd leave them there for a bit and then rinse and use. I must say I just chuck 'em in the sink - anything dodgy rises to the surface anyway, I find. We're all still here...0

Hi shazba,
There's an earlier thread on using blackberries and apples that may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

I made Spiced Blackberry Chutney last week:
1lb Blackberries
150g Sugar
150g Chopped Onions
1 tbsp Dijon Mustard
3 tbsp Chopped Root Ginger
2 tbsp Water
150ml Cider Vinegar
All in the pot apart from the vinigar and boil until blackberries burst. Add Vinger and simmer for 10 minutes and the put in pots. Should keep for a few months or more and it's very tasty.0
