help with work after maternity leave

Hi all! I'm due to finish maternity leave in september, however, my employer is only able to keep my current position open on nights. This is now impossible for me to continue doing for a number of reasons. My partner works nights also but in a better well paid position, since going onto maternity leave, our employer has completely changed structure and he seems to be at work nearly every night. Then there's the fact that my contract changed to 0 hours, so would only work as and when I was needed which is not a stable enough position for me to remain in. Then finally, there's thechildcare element - not many people willing to have 3 young children overnight!
So, I had a long long chat with my brother with regards to my options which led me here. Just wondered if anyone had any ideas as to employment options? Also, the massive issue that came up was whether I'm able to apply for new jobs with a new employer whilst on maternity leave, obviously not starting until September?

i think I would phone ACAS, because unless you have taken ADDITIONAL m/l I believe your employer has to offer you back your old job. There are guidelines for if they can't. It's not clear if you were on a zero hours contract before m/l either.
Nothing to stop you looking for other work, however remember to give your employer the right notice of whether you are coming back or not.Signature removed for peace of mind0
