Hi This is my first post so i hope its ok, I have 2 months left on maternity and i am wanting to start earning some extra cash so I can top up my hopefully part time wage or have a fall back if they say no too part time. I know i would have to resgister as self employed but can i legally earn money while getting statutary maternity pay? Also does anyone have any good ideas for making money with a baby. I was looking at some of the work from home telesales opertuanities on here but im not really in a position to risk loosing money

If you are receiving SMP then you can do as much work as you like as a self-employed person without losing your SMP payment. (If it is MA you are receiving then you cannot work at all)
You could try mystery shopping but I struggled when my little one was a baby and quite a few jobs state no children. You could also consider surveys, eBay, selling books/Cds on Amazon, GreenMetropolis. There's plenty of ideas on this forum.

There are also work from home biz either party plan, holding coffee mornings, brochures through doors, depends on what appeals, all could be fitted in around a young baby and onwards. My youngest was three when i started doing brochure drops, she loved sitting in the buggy holding a pile of brochures on her lap and folding them in half ready to put through doors, it also got me out of the house which was much needed. Probably coffee mornings, party plan would fit in better with a very young baby. Lots of ideas on here.We love what we are doing and we love why we're doing it!!0

Yes there are lots of ideas on this forum. Have fun reading through!
I sell Usborne Books which I find fits in really well with young children. I started when my daughter was 4 months (she is now 5yrs) and I also have a son who is 20 months. It's very flexible, so you work when you want to work and you can take your little one along to certain places with you.
Mystery shopping is good when you have a little one too (see the Mystery Shopping thread). It gets you out and about earning a bit here and there. And surveys will give you a bit of pocket money too. Lots of sites to sign up to.
Good luck in finding something to suit you!0 -

Hi, this is something I am working on too. I have started to build up selling items on ebay which I knit myself, just little things and low prices but its to give me extra money when I go on maternity leave and something to do when I become an SAHM. Got any hobbies that you could turn into cash by making and selling things?
Hope it goes well for you.BSC #215/No.1 Jan 09 Club0 -

Just make sure you check your brief because some companies state you cannot be accompanied on a visit.
I did Mystery Shopping in my last couple of months of Maternity leave, I only came back to work last week! I probably made about £500 in that time.A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea
Where does the time go? :think:0 -
Hi Iklemiss,
MY Wife is on maternity too and has become part of a MLM (multi level marketing) company to earn extra cash, it is really good! the beauty is that it is a free application that you give away and the more people use it, the more money you make (it is calculated through the advertising). Feel free to do some research first becasue i thought it was a scam but many websites out there say that is really good for the average Joe to earn extra cash. If you know alot of people (through facebook etc) then it is ideal. The app itself is not dissimilar to this website in that it appears on your google homepage and if you are looking up an item to buy (example: Sony 10MP Camera) you can press buttons on the app that enable you to search the entire web for the "cheapest" option, you can then press a button which tells you what vouchers are available and also a map button to take you there. It is ingeniuos. The more people use it, the more money you make. You have to become a distributor yourself which costs just $199 (£140) but the money returned is really good if you work at it, esepcially if you then get other people to sign up as distributors because you then also earn money on THEIR contacts!
Not sure if i'm allowed to post a link but since it is done innocently i'm hoping they let it through, check it out at shoppingenie (.com/comparison) and download the "basic" app (as this works in the UK) to trial it for free first and see if you want to be a distributor. Hope this helps and best of luck with the baby!!:T0 -
