First acne at 30!!!?

Hi all - can anyone offer any advice on adult acne - ive always had oily skin and occasional spots, but never acne. As of two years ago, I started getting these raised tiny bumps around my hairline that are always there. I assumed it was just congested skin in that area.

A few weeks ago this started spreading to just above my right eyebrow so it almost looks like a rash, and someone pointed out to me that it might actually be acne (I got there after 2 years!!)

So can anyone suggest anything for adult acne - I don't really want to use teenagey type stuff as I have other needs too - does retin-a (retinol?) seem like a good bet?

I also use Avon Peels which are supposed to be like a 35% glycolic peel so would this help if i used it more frequently (every 3 days at the mo)

Any advice appreciated!

Totally sympathise with you on this, I'm nearly 28, and under a dermatologist for the same thing!

At the moment I'm on antibiotics and cream, which seem to be working, the main problem with my skin was under the jawline, rashes of bumps which sounds similar to yours. Are you particularly stressed at the moment? Mine gets worse then.

I've seen a better improvement since using new skincare too - a lot of people with 'normal' skin find it a bit harsh (which is probably why it works for me!), but I really love soap and glory clean mary - it's a cleansing milk that you rub onto dry skin, then rinse it all off. Also, boots own brand tea tree and witch hazel cleanse and tone liquid, I put some on a pad and wipe over my face after the milk.

I've had this type of skin all of my life, it was much worse in my early teens but continued right up until the past 2 years (I'm 41) and in recent months my skin is totally clear:TMy first product that worked outstandingly for me was Freederm gel, not everyone has success with this product but it was my first ever success story, I used it morning and night and my skin was totally clear in about 10 days, however this was fixing the problem but not the cause which is my more recent discovery.

Firstly Evening Primrose Oil has great effects on skin and secondly and probably most importantly I am sensitive to petroleum based ingredients in facial cream, this may sound simple to avoid but the darn thing is in cheap and expensive creams, I'm like a mad woman reading everything but now I've got my core products that agree with me I don't have to use freederm at all. I also had good results with the OCM at first but I have (and you might have as well) the type of skin that gets used to something and then reacts so I rotate products. Also very good for calming and healing skin is the snail gel product (yes, really) form H&B, there are threads on here for both the OCM and snail gel.

My skin is now an asset rather than a problem with clarity, improved tone and texture - actually its a bloody miracle:rotfl:HTH, if you need any more info I'm happy to hep if I can - good luck:)

Just wanted to say that spots/bumps along the jawline are usually hormone related, I had great success with a high dose evening primrose oil:)

I read an article on adult acne, apparently its alot to do with a change in hormones. From what I understand, hormones are constantly changing throughout our lives, sometimes the changes are bigger then other times and our skin can show the effects, added to this the fact that most of us do not change our facial skin care alongside any such hormone change, you can imagine. If your hormones change to the extent that your skin type changes, but you don't change say your cleanser to one which suits, your skin may react as daily debris may not have been fully removed or the skin may have become sensitive and a cleanser may have irritated it, meaning it may produce more oils to compensate...

I don't think its the only reason for adult acne at all- I changed my diet 6 months ago, ate alot of junk and refined rubbish (living off protein bars mainly). I had more spots per one week then I'd normally get in a year! The new diet took its toll and I went back to my 'normal' eating of fresh fruit and vegetables (but too many of them) and my skin is fine now, bit yellow (beta caratine and vitamin A OD) but it just goes to show that for my skin at least, nutrition makes a big difference- it could have been that nutrition triggered certain hormones or that it messed with my immune system, either way there are many causes for adult acne I think.

thanks for the advice! i think i do try and keep my skin clean - i use a microdermabrasion scrub every couple of days, and the avon peel which should have helped a lot with acne..

I used to use the OCM and it kept my skin clear but didn't help much with these bumps. Also used to use vaseline all over my face but my skin was lovely back then! :o

    Snail gel?? :rotfl:

Yesterday someone turned me onto the idea that it might be pityrosporum folliculitis, and ive just looked up pics and it looks similar (though less severe at the mo). This is caused by a fungal infection  so might explain why other acne remedies don't work. Its commonly mistaken for acne apparently so one to keep in mind for anyone with acne that doesnt respond to normal acne creams.

I've looked up treatments, and one is to use head and shoulders or a sulphur based shampoo on the skin, I'm also going to try tea tree oil neat on my forehead.

Will update if this helps as it would be useful for anyone with 'acne' which is actually this condition

I got 'acne' in my late 20's too. The doctor described it as that, and although persistant big painful spots, not as many as i would class as acne. I got antibiotics, but i felt they never got to the root of the problem ;)

I've been using neutrogina spot stress stuff, can't remember exact name, but i've found it really good. I use daily facial scrub in morning, wipes in evening, and a spot clearer gel both times. Also use face mask on a sunday now. I did read somewhere that only ever using wipes leads to spots since it doesn't clear the dead skin cells, hence my new routine. I used wipes day and night previously. It's made such a difference, no spotty chin and everywhere looks much clearer - even getting compliments now!!
