It's disgusting the stuff a lot of supermarkets throw away. When I was young, the Co-op used to leave perfectly good fruit that was just past its best before date and/or slightly misshapen in boxes next to their big metal bins, so I used to help myself to it on the way home from school. Once, I got about a dozen bottles of Ribena too. Unfortunately such "bargains" are rarely available nowadays, because shops go to great efforts to make sure people like me can't get our hands on the stuff that they throw out.
Asda have an infuriating habit of binning unsold reduced stuff about 15 minutes before shutting time! They are also the only aupermarket I know which actually shuts at shutting time - they will send staff to round up stray customers as closing time approaches, rather than have just one till assistant stay an extra 5 minutes to serve the stragglers.0
