Unfreezing bank account after bankruptcy?

I am about to go bankrupt as I have my court date for Monday 7th June.........all of my forms have been filled in online, printed and ready (but not signed as yet) for next week.

When I went to my local CAB to get all the advice for this, I was advised to open a new basic bank account and make sure all of my direct debits had been moved to the new account before declaring myself bankrupt. So when all would be completed with the courts, the administrator will be able to see that I have already got my bank moved and will be able to arrange for my new bank account to be unfrozen. So, sure enough I have opened a Step account with Nat West ready for this, transferred all my direct debits, salary etc ready for this to happen.

Now I get paid on the 15th of the month by my employer and my direct debits usually go out shortly after that just because it is easier for me to manage my money. I am a llitle worried at the moment, due to the fact that as my salary gets paid into my account on the 15th, 8 days after my court date, what is the likelihood that my new account will not be unfrozen in time for my salary to be paid into my account for all my bills to be paid?

Thanks in advance............

Its more a case of it not getting frozen in the first place, rather than getting it unfrozen, usually you speak to the OR's office within the first couple of days who asks if you need an account left open, At the end of the day though it is down to the bank itself. Natwest are a bit hit and miss but seem to be improving.

Let us know how you get on
Hi, im Debtinfo, i am an ex insolvency examiner and over the years have personally dealt with thousands of bankruptcy cases.
Please note that any views i put forth are not those of my former employer The Insolvency Service and do not constitute professional advice, you should always seek professional advice before entering insolvency proceedings.
  • As DI says Nat West are a bit hit and miss, the only 2 banks who will leave the accounts running when you are made BR are the Co-op Cashminder account and the Barclays Cash Account. It might be worth seeing if you can open one now as a back up jusy in case Nat West don't play ball. Also might see if you can pay your DD's over the counter so to speak this month just in case your account goes pear shaped.

I would suggest getting the OR to write into the bank, stating they authorise you to keep the account open. If this is the only account open with NW, they will let you keep it open, but require permission from the OR.
    Best Regards

  • We have known Nat West to freeze accounts of BR's on here, they are a bit hit and miss as stated earlier.
