How long to keep paperwork

I'm just starting to clear out my boxes of papers :eek:, and wondered how many years I need to keep letters from utility companies, bank statements, DHSS, matters relating to divorce, (assuming I will need to keep the decree nisi etc), the bankruptcy paperwork etc etc.

I've been wondering the same lately.
Need to have a good clear out, my Dad taught me not to throw paperwork/bills etc away! But feel the amount of stuff I have is crazy!

Well, as a guideline if you're self employed the Revenue say you should keep your records for 5 years after the filing deadline for each year. I think that makes sense to follow that.
