Free wellwoman insurance for 3 months, pays £1000 if you get a female-only cancer

Options
Basically it's 3 months of free insurance cover for any woman aged 18-59 regardless of medical/family history.

It will cost you nothing and doesn't appear to be one of those things you sign up for free with but later starts charging you either as far as I can tell.

In the event that you are diagnosed with one of seven specific female cancers which you have not had before it will pay out up to £1000.

You can also cover your partner (male or female) against certain gender-specific cancers if they live with you.

It is a little bid morbid I know, but apart from the squeamishness factor I saw nothing to lose in signing up, so I did. I figured if I do get diagnosed with cancer then being in a position to claim £1000 I wouldn't have had otherwise wont do me (or my debt levels) any harm!

On the first page of sign up at the bottom it asks you to confirm you have read the policy summary, policy details and the keyfacts about thier services sheet in order to proceed. Read them before you commit to anything, then you're making a more informed decision.

It appears to be provided by Chartis, who appear to be regulated by the FSA.

    How sexists they are.

    I thought discrimination was outlawed

I assume males dont get cancer then?

I *think* *males* can be covered on this: https://www.chartisdirect.co.uk/CancerCare/quote/index.aspx
You should know in our politically correct world discrimination is a one way valve :-)

That looks like a standard quote Mr Oink

It seems insurance companies are exempt
    • Insurance companies and similar bodies. These may discriminate in relation to the provision of an annuity, life assurance policy, accident insurance policy or similar matter involving an assessment of risk where such discrimination is based on actuarial or other data on which it is reasonable to rely. For example, women can be offered cheaper car insurance than men because statistics show they are safer drivers.

They don't get cervical or uterine cancer.

The cancers covered in the OP were gender specific - so didn't include bowel cancer, for instance.

But males get other types of cancer which are often not published enough unlike breast cancer etc so why discriminate?

Far enough discriminate on risk, age, sex due to perceived risk

Males get gender-specific cancers yes, that's a really good point.

I'm a woman and I live alone. Any link I click is going to be because I thought it was relevant to me and/or of interest to me, as is to be expected. I would have thought there are insurance policies about male specific cancers such as testicular cancer. Not having any live-in boyfriend, husband or son to protect I wouldn't have really noticed such a male policy and so please don't take my only posting a female policy to mean there aren't any male ones, it just means my household happens to have no men. I don't really notice other products or services aimed soley at men such as male grooming products either, just by way of explaination.

I'm sorry if I upset the men on the board, it certainly wasn't my intention to. Men are every bit as valuable as women of course and I would wholeheartedly support any man who felt he had a grievance against Chartis if it turns out there isn't a policy offering a similar and free wellman cover too. It is basically unfair, whatever the technical justifications may or may not be, that much is not really in question.

I know though that many of us (like myself) have come here in dire financial straits or with big goals for our financial futures and so for many £1000 from anywhere is welcome. I had a degree of uncertainty about if this product was in good taste or not, so I decided to leave that decision to each individual MSE member for themselves and post it anyway.

I certainly hadn't anticipated it may offend our male MSE members and for any offence I have caused unintentionally by posting this I appologise.

Sarsie doubt you offended anyone you posted in good faith. The issue is primary why the company exclude this offer to females only, of course companies offer better rates depending on risk no issue with that at all thats common practice and rightly so.

It just resent them excluding males when they really is no need for this, its unfair and damn right discrimination
