Employers willing to employ older people

Hi

My dad's 56 and he's really struggling to find work. He gets the feeling that employers are being discriminatory because of his age. He's at the stage where he'd do pretty much anything at the moment.

Does anyone know - Are there any large employers that are more open minded when it comes to employing older people?

    B&Q for definite.

Don't know why companies discriminate - older workers can often be the most hard working and reliable you can get.
  • If he's only 56, I doubt they are discriminating against him for his age. 56 is in no way "old", to me at least. He could probably find a job at a local grocery store or restaurant. Around my parts, there are always older people working at grocery stores in the checkout lanes & bagging.

We still have a 78 year old working on the assembly line in our Factory!. True, she only works about 12 hours per week, but the fact remains she is still employed. She is damn good at her job too.

We've also recently taken on a 54 year old design engineer too and most of the employees fall into the 40 - 60 age group. Not all employers are discriminating against age.

Its hard for anybody to find a job these days, and even a lot of younger people have been out of work for an extended period

I'm a "mature" person and the agencies fell over themselves to try and get me work. I applied for the job with 95 other applicants and I remember walking into the agency to register and came across loads of youngsters and I nearly walked out! However, I was successful and 18 months later, still there. I guess in a lot of ways, employers will see older people as being more reliable and generally experienced.

I went into Homebase today and was served by Doreen who was very mature but extemely efficient and friendly...

I also don't understand why people automatically think that older people should be working in supermarkets.

    I'm not...I got myself a very good office job.#

Nothing wrong in those jobs btw, I did it myself in my younger days...

Try http://www.maturityworks.co.uk/ - jobs that they've emailed me about have tended to be in the charity sector - but worth a look .

    Jobs are nationwide.
