Hairdressing training part-time??

Hi,
I'm 22 and I need the income I get at the moment, I know a hairdressing apprenticeship won't pay what I need each month, but I currently work part-time so I have a day or two a week I could dedicate to training but I can't seem to find a part-time course like that?

Not sure if I'm looking for the impossible...?

Wish I'd never bothered with flipping A levels in subjects I'll never use and spent my time at college doing this but hey.

  • Ah, I feel for you! It is very hard starting out in the hairdressing industry. I, myself, am a hairdresser (part-time) as I also have 2 little ones & a household to run. It is a good source for a little extra income here and there.

I know there were hairdressing training classes and such, back in the day. I'm sure there are still some now, just I don't know of any off the top of my head. I wish you the best of luck in finding a hairdressing part-time training session.

Where are you? Do you know what kind of qualification you want?
    Try searching HERE
I just did a quick search for hairdressing, PT day and got lots of hits so hopefully you'll find something suitable near to you.

Looking for a good and recognised qualification. I suppose preferably NVQ.
Really don't want to work in a salon if I can avoid it but all the courses say should be working in a salon.
I know you would have to be in that sort of atmosphere to learn and practice but I'd need to be able to do it on a part-time basis rather than full-time.

I don't think I mind not learning colouring to start off with if it makes a difference?

my college does part time NVQs in the evening, well its actually 2pm-9pm one day a week. You get to work in the college salon, so do not necessarily need to be employed at a hairdressers but obvioulsy it would help. Maybe offer to do some voluntary work in a local salon or see if the college can help you with that.

Phone the college and arrange an appointment to see the admissions advisor for the programme they might be able to help you.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

I trained as a hairdresser (but quit after a few years). I went to college one day a week to do NVQ level 2 and 3, and worked the rest of the week in a salon. I can honestly say that I learned next to nothing at college, it was all about ticking the relevant boxes to get your NVQ finished. Everything useful I learned was in the salon from watching experienced stylists and practicing on some lovely customers who didn't mind a trainee. Even the girls who went to college full time all had Saturday jobs as well. You definitely need to be working in a salon.

I remember when I was doing my training, there was an evening course available one night a week. We had an older girl (she would have been in her early thirties) working in our salon who was doing that course, as well as going to her office job during the week, and then she came and worked with us on a Friday evening and Saturday. She has her own salon now.

Oh and colouring is a requisite part of the NVQ, you can't just leave it out.
