Need to delay accepting a job offer!

I started a locum position after being unemployed since March following redundancy. The locum position is through an agency and on the 3rd day of the assignment, I got offered a permanent job. The money is quite rubbish but I am pleased to be working again and taking the view that some money is better than none.

Thing is, I have an interview for a much better job on Thursday next week and want to wait for the outcome of that interview before making a decision.

I feel bad accepting the first job if I'm going to leave soon as the employer will incur the agent's introduction fee and being a very small business, it's a lot for them to incur. I once had to look into these terms and my understanding is the fee is incurred as soon as I sign the contract as opposed to after a probationary period but happy to be told I'm wrong?

I have tried to delay the job acceptance by suggesting we review it again in two weeks to make sure the employer and I are both still happy but he wasn't keen. I think it is because of the extra hourly money he is paying the agency while I am there as temporary staff.

The last thing I want is to find I didn't get the other job and this one is off the table or filled by someone else. I'm really quite stressed about this!

Can anyone offer any advice or confirm at what point the agency's introduction fee will be paid?

Thanks in advance.

Just tell them the truth, say that you have had a couple of full time emloyment offers and you are considering your options. they may even offer you a pay increase to help you make your mind up. give him a definite date that you would of made a decision by, this can then be worked out with the introduction fee.

Think of yourself, accept the job and if it turns out you pick the other job then tough on the other parties, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I did initially tell them I had an interview for a permanent role and that was how the discussion about me staying there started. I indictaed that the salary was lower than what I was looking for but he said he couldn't pay anymore. I suppose if I accept it I can ask again for more before agreeing...i.e. "If you pay me x amount then I'll stay". Just wish there was a way to delay it! If not then I may have to be selfish and think of myself. I was very loyal to my last employer and saw a long term future there but they didn't give a crap about that when they made me redundant so maybe I should learn to be more selfish.

Also most agencies pay back some of the fee if people leave before a set time (this used to be the case anyway!)

Tell them that you want to negotiate a higher salary and benifits to be permanent, ask what are they going to offer?

The introduction fee for an agency is usually on 30 day payment terms. You will also likely find that there will be a rebate fee for the client if the candidate leaves within a set time. This vary's massively, but the employer should have negotiated as I am not finding any clients at the moment who will pay the usual terms.

    Hope this helps
