Part time job ideas? - to fit around shiftworker

I was wondering if anyone can help me come up with some part time job ideas to fit around my husbands shifts and also avoid childcare.
I would be able to work 1 to 2 days a week but these days would be different each week (which I can easily provide months in advance) - I don;t want to do any sort of franchise or anything with financial comittment.
I am very flexible as to what I do and enjoy working with people/customers etc, I have previously been in full time work for 20 years
I would so love to hear form anyone that works this way and please can you let me know the kind of work you do? Thanks

Hi, can't help sorry but this is exactly my problem! husband works shifts on a 4 week rotating pattern which means I could never work the same days or hours each week. so you are not alone! :)

At the moment I do work following being able to get the hours that fit from my current employer after being on maternity leave and returning to work. But it means it is so hard for me to change jobs to one that I would really enjoy and like to do as no one else will fit in with the hours and days I need.

Hope that you can find something soon.

Look for places that also do shifts

    Hospitals are my first thought.

Don't know what your skills/experience are. Have you thought about temping - you could have a chat with a temping agency, they would tell you whether it was the sort of thing they might be able to help with. Downside is that they probably wouldn't be able to guarantee work - depends whether you would be relying on it or just accepting the extra money if it was available.

What sort of work do you want to do/ are you experienced in? You can't just choose what you do based on the hours.

i have the same problem and became a care worker in the community. my work place is open from 07.00 - 22.00 7 days a wk and we help people to live at home . i work on the bank team which cover sick leave / hoildays etc and do get work when i want it put the pay is per call etc so not brilliant but it all helps ..........
  • Thankyou for your replies, and thankyou cookie54 the carer role is one I had thought of as although I haven;t done it before as a job I do have experience within my own family and have shared family care for my mum for the last 10 yrs. We have some agencies where I live so I may be able to do something similar as youself.

My own work experience in IT account management, I have worked in the corporate market for 20 years and its not really a job I can go back to with any flexibilty as you need to be full time. I have developed many customer/client skills over the years so am hoping to use those somewhere else.
I am not looking for any big career at the moment just a little something to help out with the bills over the next year or so before I go back to the rat race!

Other ideas I have thought of are hotels? (we have some big chains where I live) someone else mentioned temping that would be good too. I have been used to trying most things and as soon as able to work at 15 did every part time job around school - bakery, Woolies, Macdonalds, Waitrose so am sure something will come up :)

OP does your husband work the same hours each day? If so could you work in the evening, perhaps 4 hours every day from 6pm to 10pm in a supermarket? If hubby is home at 5.30pm for example that wouldn't cause any problems with the daily routine.

Are there any days when your husband is guaranteed to be off? Being able to work bank holidays can be very useful in retail. Could your husband perhaps ask for the same day off every week (and still be flexible with the other day off), does he really have to change his days off every single week?

I can think of plenty of jobs where they would like staff that can be "on call" and if your days off coincide with their rota they will use you, but the tricky thing is you won't be able to work full time for a month to build up the experience first. That's why I think fixed hours in the evening part tiem would be the best option to start.

What about cleaning jobs, dont know how flexible they would be but i would have thought if you gave them emough notice they would take note and adjust the rota

Self employed cleaning might be feasible: I know some people would want the same day each week, but others wouldn't mind, especially if you were coming fortnightly.

What about ironing? I know there are threads on Up your Income about that!

my friend is doing nurse training and does support worker bank work at the local hospital. they seem to always need people. it is not a qualified post so not amazing pay but not bad either. she rings up when she knows she has a free day coming up and asks if they need anyone for say this coming saturday. they usually do. they are fine when she doesn't do anything for weeks due to commitments of family and studying.
she gets about £120 if she does a saturday night all night but says they often have 8 or 4 hr shifts available during the day too.
Might be even more flexible than the community stuff?
