Bristol restaurants etc

Going down to Bristol for 2 nights next week. Wondering if any of you Bristol dwellers could recommend a good restaurant or pub for evening meals - good value. Also any tips about things on in or around the city at the moment. We lived there until 17 years ago, so I expect to see a lot of changes. I expect we'll do the obligatory visit to Clifton and the suspension bridge. Just about to look at the city on the website, but I always think the MSE community come up with the best ideas! Thanks in advance.:T

  • I'm off home to Bristol this weekend. Like you I left almost 18 years ago.

Not sure which resturants as their are loads! But definately go down to the harbour the old watershed has loads of bars & restuarants and lots to do down there. My other half was introduced to a place down there called "THE BUTTERY" by my dad. Its a small cafe on the way up to the SS Great Britain and they make the best Bacon Sarnies and a mug of tea. (not quite what your looking for but worth a mention). My Mum & Dad would probably recommend THE WORKS, a fish restaurant. I've heard them mention that one a few times and of course Whiteladies Road, loads of places there.

Bristol Zoo's worth a visit as thats changed loads. And of course shopping in Broadmead. Now that really has changed!

Hope this is of some help even though I am an ex Bristolian!

Shopping in Broadmead is pretty ghastly at the moment because they are digging up all the surrounding roads and building a new 'flagship store'. Traffic is horrendous at certain times of day, noise relentless when outside etc.

On the plus side, lots of shops remain standing and open (a few have vanished!) and some of them have permanent sales on to tempt us in!

As for restaurants - whereabouts in the city are you staying? We've recently been to Colley's Supper Rooms on Whiteladies Road which wasn't cheap but certainly filling, and we also like Valentino's in Westbury on Trym for quiet, good value food.

  • Thanks, that's really helpful. I really missed Broadmead when I moved away - and all the great charity/secondhand shops in Gloucester Road - we lived in Bishopston, so I used to pop into these regularly. Used to get loads of toys and clothes etc for my little boy (now 20!). Will definitely check out the harbour area and Whiteladies Rd.

I really liked Browns, next to the museum on Park Street. The food is always filling and delicious, although it's not especially cheap, it's not expensive.

    linky

I went to the zoo the other day and it's really great! Make sure you look at when the feeding times and talks are, the feeding times are really good because you're guaranteed to see them up close doing omething then!

Just been checking the sugarvine site - very good, isn't it. Several deals for eating 2 for 1 etc. Just what I wanted. Thanks so much.

Still LOTS of charity shops on Gloucester Road, I'm pleased to say! However, there's now a bus lane running down it, so parking is more restricted and impossible during the rush hour. There is a free car park on the lh side going up, I think where the swimming baths used to be (now closed). Not always spaces, but 3 hours when you get one. I think - check when you get there!

Lots of good places to eat along there as well: La Ruca is a favourite of mine for a friendly lunch. Above a health food shop (lots of them as well!) That's on the RH side going up, not very far up.
