Help! - New baby present ideas needed

Options
My bridesmaid has had her baby on Monday. I want to get her a presnet and obviously want to get a present. Refuse to buy clothes or toys ( won't wear that often as they grow so fast and will prob get loads of clothes and what can a newborn actually do with a toy). Want to get a practical gift mainly for now for the parents with maybe a wee keepsake. Clothes and toys more suitable for Chriostmas as he'll be 7 months by then. Any ideas? Also, what's a suitable amount? Thinking maybe about £50. Me and her both hard up at moment.

i was given a set of 2 little trinket boxes for ds2. one said first tooth and the other said first lock of hair. i gave my sister a set that you could make a hand or footprint of the baby which she loved. I did get for ds1 a frame and inside was a teddy on a card saying his name, date of birth, weight, time of birth. that was really nice. usually we ask what is wanted/needed and buy that although I am currently crocheting my sisters 'bump' a teddy. he will take quite a while to make as he is rather large!!! :P

cant you ask what she needs or would like!! my sister bought her sil loads of bibs (after a comment from me about always running out) and was looked down on by bil but a month later thanked as they needed them!!!!

I love the moneyboxes you can get from places like the disney shop (although I am not a fan of a lot of their stuff) & have bought these for several friends.

It's maybe not the best time of year unless you can find a Christmas shop (there's one in Callander and one in Perth) but I had a friend with twins born early December and I pushed the boat out and bought them a hand carved nativity set. It wasn't cheap however because they were twins I felt ok with spending more and I liked the idea it would be brought out every years and would be a family tradition and an heirloom.
I know they won't appreciate it for a year or two yet but I think it will be nice when they are older.

Meant to say also I have a policy when buying a baby gift to buy a small thing for the new mum - even if it's just fancy hand cream. I think after what she's gone through it's not just baby who deserves a present!

I know you said you wasn't bothered about buying clothes but..... when my Daughter was born, I bought her a lovely romper suit, hat and bib from ebay which was personalised with her name embroided on all of them. I've also bought them for friends who have had babies and they have all loved them.

My Daughter is 2 now, but her teddy wears the hat and her doll wears the romper and bib

think the nappy cake idea is a good one as they are supposed to be the new big thing. Its totally practical and fairly easy to make. The trick is to go for hidden ingredients as I find the clothes are a nightmare to get looking straight. Also it doesn't need to be all matching then and half the fun is unravelling the cake to find out whats inside. I find TK Maxx are great for picking up good quality soft toys to go on top. Sorry can't post links at the moment but if you type modern baby cakes into your search engine you should be able to get some good ideas. I like Oh So Baby Cakes and Shower my Baby

    Hi Snowy

A idea may be a towel cake made with a baby towels and nappies if you wanted to use these. You could put in practical things like baby wash, talc, shampoo, wipes. It may be nice to get a soft toy that she can keep and grow up with

A great present is a pamper session or something personal as well for mum. You get loads for the baby but people forget about the mum!!
If not I loved 2 presents - a good baby activity mat and hooded towels for the baby.
A nice photo frame is good or a first tooth / curl box
