Clearing an old default

Hi everyone
I've just got hold of my credit file from checkmyfile.com, and very enlightening it is too!
I have got an old default on my file which I would like to get rid of. It was an old Vodafone mobile phone account that I rarely used and forgot about when I moved house back in the middle of 2003. For reasons I'm not quite sure of, it never followed me to my subsequent addresses.
Anyway it's recorded as a default with CallCredit & Equifax. The notes say "Account closed on 13/11/2003 with an outstanding balance of £39.00".
Is it worth me getting in touch with Vodafone and trying to settle this debt? Will they then remove it from my file? It's my only piece of bad credit, and for such a paltry amount it's annoying to have it on my file.
What's your best advice?
