Handing in Notice

I want to hand in my notice at my p/t job. I want my last working day to be Saturday 19th June so am going to hand my notice in on Saturday 12th June.

I work in a shop - do I hand my notice into my shop manager (who deals with staffing rotas), my area supervisor (who deals with hiring/firing etc) or to base office (who deal with contracts etc - these are the people I have to contact if phoning in sick)?

Or should I copy my letter so that all 3 are notified?

If I send a letter to my area supervisor and/or base office it will have to go through the post so do I date it and send it on the 12th or do I date it and send it a couple od days earlier so that it gets there on the 12th and just state in it that I want my last working day to be the 19th?

Sorry for all the questions but I've never resigned before so not sure of all the ins and outs!!

    Firstly double check your contract, generally it is 1 months notice or 4 weeks that is required, secondly to be thorough I would copy it to all 3 than expect a flurry of phone calls as to why probably :)

    Thirdly have you got another job to go to? Think long and hard if you dont, a job you hate is much better than joining the long line at the job centre ;)

    Have checked my contract - because I've been there less than 2 years it's only a weeks notice.

    Will copy it to all 3 just to be thorough! Should I post on the day or in advance?

    I currently work 2 jobs - this one is just 15 hours a week and isn't needed anymore!

    I'd send it in advance, stating that you want to give notice as from 12th with your last working day being on 19th.
    That'll give them more time to try to find cover so they should be appreciative.

    Ive goven notice to HR or personnel before as they deal with contracts etc and not had any problems,

    Does your contract require written notice?

    If not I think you can phone and back it up in writing still valid form the date you phoned.

    But the worst that can happen by sending it in early is they counter notice.

    So post on the Thurs an give a bit more than a week.

    I do have to give notice in writing. what's 'counter notice'?

    Thanks - I don't think they'd do that but if they do then I guess I can live with it!!
