in Cutting tax
This isn't technically in the right forum, but I thought that there might be someone who knows something about my query.
Me and my partner own our own home in Coventry. I have recently accepted a new job in Huddersfield, so we will be moving up to Huddersfield, renting a property and therefore paying council tax in Huddersfield. As we will be leaving our home in Coventry empty, are we eligible for a Coventry council tax discount / exemption?
Any help will be appreciated

Straight forward question, but unfortunately not a straight foward answer.
Where are you settled at with regards to family, doctors etc ?, What would you class as your 'home' ?, if the job ended in Huddersfield then where would you go ?
It can be a difficult area as it involves 'Intention to Return' as well as the concept of 'Sole or Main Residence'.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
It will be a permanent move to Huddersfield, meaning we will not be returning to Coventry. This means that our permanent home will be in Huddersfield. We will therefore be changing doctors to one in Huddersfield. All my family live in the Yorkshire area, which is where I am from
Our Coventry flat will be placed on the market prior to us moving (meaning it will be sold whilst empty), which should hopefully show that we have no intention of returning to Coventry0 -
The property in coventry will be a second homeuntil its sold.
If its unfurnished and unoccupied you would get a 6 month exemption (class C) followed by a charge between 50% and 100% depending on the rate set in Coventry.
If its furnished and unoccupied then the charge is between 50% and 90% depending on the rate set in Coventry.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. Fantastic, thanks for that. SO just to clarify, if we leave the flat unfurnished and empty, then we will get a 6 month exemption from paying Council Tax on the property?0
