In July 2009 the largest ever haul of Anglo Saxon gold and silver, valued at £3.285m, was discovered in Staffordshire by amateur metal detector Terry Herbert. Interest in archaeology has never been greater – according to the British Museum, treasure uncovered by the public now accounts for 90% of all discoveries in the UK.
