Tell me a job is better than no job, lol

O.k my situation.

I've been self employed for 6 months and it's died. We're desperately saving for our wedding this year (which was booked when I was in a good paying job) and we need cash so I've decided to get a job.

But I'll admit I'm young and have never been in this situation before. I've been lucky with work (fell into a job after uni) and never had to look for work before.

I've been offered an interview for a factory assembly worker and it's minimum wage (£5.80 an hour) and is about an hours drive away. I have a car so can do the drive but must admit Im used to working within a 20 minute drive of my house.

BUT please tell me a job is better than no job, and I can't afford to be picky when I'm skint??

Take the factory job. If you enjoy it, great. If not, it'll be a real good incentive to find something different and higher-paid.

£5.80 an hour, what a pi$$take, I agree with Wings that a job is better than no job, if its an hours drive though have you taken into account the cost of petrol and wear and tear on your car?

I wouldn't bother taking the job. you will earn approx. £55 a day, whilst spending about £25 a day on fuel. Take off your Tax & NI, and you will be lucky to end-up with £75.00 at the end of the week.
If it is one that the jobcentre forced you into taking, then you need to point-out to them that it is a job with insufficient pay to cover your living expenses.

Agreed, plus it is so much easier to get another job when you are in employment. Think about who an employer would rather take on - someone who has the get up and go to take a less than ideal job, but trying to improve themselves and be self sufficient, or someone sat at home doing nothing all day?

    Good luck! ;)

Hmm it's definately an interesting thing to think about. Just told my OH and he agrees with patman. He said I'd be earning about £100 a week which he can earn in a morning, lol. So he doesn't see the point.

Bu the interview will be good practice so I'll still go to that.

I also actually agree with Patman, on the basis that by the time you consider petrol costs, and wear and tear to the car, you'll be earning very little, whilst losing a lot of time out your day!

I've done many factory jobs in my time, but all were local-ish!

Try looking up less popular jobs i.e. ones with antisocial hours like nightshift - they tend to have more vacancies, and pay more per hour.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

definitely not worth it, it would have to be a decent wage not min wage to make it worth the 2 hours drive every day.

Isn't there a bus service you can use? I have just noticed that i can get a monthly bus pass for £31 instead of £16 a week! I travel an hour each to a job that i only work 3.15 hours a day!! A lot might say it's not worth it but it's a job and hopefully i'll get up the ladder quite quickly.

I'd personally take the job it would be much better than signing on, You might even qualify for working tax credits?

Take the job, when you apply for others employers will look favourably on someone who takes a crap job rather than go on the dole, (I would and often do). Better to work end up with £10 more than the dole and have some dignity than fall into the mode of one of the great scroungers.

Too right, with the thread title.

I was unemployed for about 3 months after I left school before I found my current job.

The most poor and boring 3 months of my life.
