Bank staff rights?!?

I was employed Sept 2008 for a local charity, I agreed with the boss I would be best on a bank contract as I couldnt work school holidays and she said this was the only way they could do it. This would mean I only get paid when I worked. I agreed as it worked well for me too....and she said she would give me 20hrs a week work and up until Christmas I have always had this. Anyway the boss went off sick just before Christmas and hasnt really been back until recently.
Whilst she was away her boss started to look deeper into how the department was run and my hours and responsibility droped and so far this year have had at least 12 weeks unpaid due to lack of work. About 4 weeks ago I went into see the new boss and asked if there was still a job for me...he said not really and he felt bad that I had been lead to think there was a long term job for me and would try and find something else for me....I asked if I should go home as there was nothing to do and he said yes and to come back the following week....but when i did the jobs he had for me had been covered by someone else so there was nothing for me to do. I explained I need work to pay my bills and said I would be better off looking for somethng else and he agreed. So I informed tax credits I wasnt working and they needed my p45 etc for income support.....so I asked them for this and they have sorted it out and apparently its in the post.
However today spoke to a manager in a different department about a possible job, he said he wasnt aware I had left and they have rules on re employing staff who have left. So I decided to find out if people had been told I no longer had a job there and text a friend......she said it was down that I left the job when this wasnt the case they said there was no job for me and as i wasnt making money and couldnt pay my bills so I had to leave to find something else and pay my bills. But as I a struggling in the short term have applied for income support....however they have said if I walked from a job I cant claim for 26 weeks!!!
Im so angry and upset, there was no job but because they are saying I left I cant get any extra help and I dont know how Im going to pay my bills. what can I do???? What rights do bank staff have?!

Problem with bank work is that you are there as an agency worker - cheaper for the employer than an agency; better for the worker as\ you tend to get better rates and more consistent work.
You would have the same rights as if you worked for Reed; Addecco etc. Have a double check with ACAS as Sue suggested, but if they've decided you're not a fit with the needws of the dept, as a temp not a lot you can do I think.
