To Much Money In My Account!

I have just received an email from PayPal to say that they have duplicated a credit into my account in error. I have checked with my bank and this is the case.

What should I do?

Part of me thinks send it back to PayPal now but another part of me thinks leave it in my account until they scream at me for it back so that I can earn the interest on it!

It is just over £300.

Can I get in trouble if I don't pay it back straight away does anyone know?

leave it in your account until they ask for it back
  • Can't they just request it back from your bank anyway?

  • I would just give them it back, I presume that is what the e mail they sent you is asking for. For what you would earn in interest it is not worth the hassle. What if they think you are messing them about too much and close your paypal account?

Methinks you may as well just give it back now.

When they request it back, tell them that the money has been absorbed into your overdraft and is not immediately available. Make an offer of repayment at, say, £10.00 per month, less your costs.

Thanks for the excellent idea, but I get worried I'll get into trouble. I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to it :o

Leave it in there - otherwise when they take it back your account could end up £300 OD.

Did you make the original withdrawal on 23rd July? A lot of ebay sellers had transactions from the 23rd duplicated.

Just an update to let you know that I've received another email from Paypal asking for the money back and this time they say it has to be in by 31/08/06.

Oh well it was nice dream to think they would forget all about it and say "sorry about our mistake, but why don't you treat yourelf to something nice!" :p

Still think I'll leave it until next week before I transfer it back, you never know I could earn 1p interest!
