Pursuing the wrong person

Hi,

Newbie here so apologise if this is in the incorrect section.

Last week I received a letter from 1st credit saying that they were trying to contact someone regarding a personal matter. So I called the number on the letter.

What I got was a very rude lady on the end telling me I owed about £500 and that I needed to make a payment that very second else they would take me to court. When I asked what the alleged debt was for, she told me that it was a catalogue company. Again she asked me to pay, again I said no as it wasnt my debt. After a bit of backwards and forwards of me telling her it wasnt my debt, she informed me that the account would be put on hold for 7 days until I decided how I wanted to make payment! She was really rude and even though it is not my debt, made me quite upset.

Anyhow, not letting them beat me, I looked on the internet and found a template letter, which I sent with my £1 postal order, asking for the signed copy of the letter. I also went online and got my credit rating, which turns out is really rather good, with no searches within the last year, making sure that fraud wasnt a chance.

This debt is clearly not mine as it is not the correct name on the letter the sent (just the same initial and part surname) and I have never had a catalogue, let alone bought from one in my life. I have also since found out that they chase people with similar names in the hope that someone will respond - stupidly I did.

Has anyone else had this/ something simialr happen to them?

Many thanks in advance for info/ responses!
