My partner got his HGV training through the job centre (4 years-ago). He had to work for six-months doing car park attendant style jobs, we never got the money as it went into a 'scheme' which then paid for all his training and test, it gives enough to fail once, but if you fail a second time, game over. You get your benefits whilst on this scheme, it is quite tough as you have to find all travel expenses etc out of your benefit.

A few years ago you could get regular three-month contracts. In the current economic climate and recent influx of immigrant workers (I'm not anti-immigrants, it's not their fault!), it's not so easy to get regular work, just daily booking.

presumably you have a car licence why not go for a job on 7.5 tonne vehicles , some employers train 7.5t drivers up to class 1

Yes that is exactly what hey told us. You need to keep asking and pushing. Maybe arrange to see your local MP, he may be able to help.

    Wish you luck.

Seriously, we faced exactly the same brickwall. They DO have funds available for this kind of scheme, after all it's not a hand out, you earn all the money in order to learn a new skill in order to find gainful employment. Try your MP, if I remember correctly, that's how we smashed through that particular brickwall.

Don't let the b'stards get you down!

The government are current jobcentre funding daily so I'm sorry don't get your hope up that the course will be funded. Currently, and I do say currently the only funding is rapid response so if you were made redundant from your last job you can apply for the training to be paid but it's not a decision made by your office.
