Zovirax generic brand

Options
Wilkinsons have a generic brand of cold sore cream identical to Zovirax, which I bought at the weekend:

Zovirax - £4.48

Action - £0.97p

The ingredients are identical to the original yet is a huge £3.51 cheaper! :j

Yes, Zovirax is a BRAND name for acyclovir. Acyclovir is the generic drug name for the anti- viral. You end up paying much more for buying the branded stuff. If you go to a chemist etc and ask for acyclovir, you get exactly the same thing.

It's amazing how much we are ripped off by buying branded products isn't it!

Oh yes, not just pharmaceutical products... this is especially the case for medical equipment too... you know, we cannot function without certain things in the clinical setting, so they charge a whack. Disgusting.

As for things like paracetamol, ibuprofen, etc (over the counter things) you are much better off getting the cheapo, shop brand or whatever cheapo brand there is. eg: nurofen is a brand for ibuprofen; each capsule has 200mg ibuprofen, so it's cheaper to get the non- branded stuff. (You could, of course, get 400mg tablets, but not sure if they are available OTC).

    Anyway, I digress!:D

Acyclovir is a generic name for an antiviral drug and does come in different forms, but here in the UK I am not sure if it's the topical (cream) variety that is only available without a prescription (I would have to look in the British National Formulary for that info). Different countries will have different legal statuses for different drugs.
