Just some advice please

I'm 18 and recently (two weeks ago) got a job waiting on in a local pub. Foolishly I didn't ask how much I'd be paid for my work (I've had several jobs in the past and always found out straight away pretty much, I don't know what I was playing at) and I've just had my first pay packet of £24/6 hours work which I believe is below the minimum wage. Along with this the week before my boss asked me for some information on a scrap such as NI number, date of birth, address and my name, which I wrote on some paper and gave into them. They've just told me they've lost it, and I'm pretty angry since it's quite personal information and for all I know anyone behind the bar or even a punter could've picked it up.

Just some advice on what to do in this situation would be grand, I just asked for next week off and was met with some snarky comments but I didn't want to make anything worse so I just left it. I just feel like walking right now, but since it's my local I guess I'd feel awkward going there in the future.

Comments

  • Firstly does he know your age? Could he think your still under 18. If I was you I would query the wage and see what he says.

As for the piece of paper, unfortunate, but accidents dont happen so I wouldn't make an issue of this.

As for the holidays; its approaching the busy time of the year and you didnt give much notice so I would expect snarky comments in fairness.

The boss made a big deal of me being over 18 before hiring me, they wanted me to work on the bar at some point so yeah it was part of the reason I was hired I think. You're right about the snarky comments, it's something I've had planned since November and forgotten about until my girlfriend reminded me today so I was pretty apologetic, but they're well within their rights to have a go.

You're not necessarily getting paid below NMW (which is only £4.83 gross), but it is possible you're paying too much income tax. Did you give your new employer a P45?

It's not been asked for but I'm guessing that's because I've not been there long? And I haven't had a payslip yet, getting it next week apparently due to the loss of my NI number and other details. Just been paid in cash so far.

When you get your first payslip, post the details either here or on the Cutting Tax board and ask someone to check it for you. I rather suspect your hourly rate is legal but your deductions are too high. Can't really give you a definitive conclusion without seeing the numbers though!

PS I wouldn't wait to be asked, I would just give my P45 to Payroll. You say you've worked before, so I assume you have one.

It's also possible that they've given you an advance while they wait for your details and then it will all get sorted out properly. Sloppy, in that they should tell you that's what they're doing.

They're again they may just be hoping you don't know what the NMW is ...

    Very possible on both counts.

I recently did some work for an organisation and they forgot to submit my hours to the finance dept before the wages 'cut off' date.

What they did was give me an 'emergency payment' which was in some way an 'advance' (even though I should have been paid earlier).

I cannot remember the exact percentage, but their policy is to retain over and above what the likely deductions are from the earnings (Tax, NI etc.) but it always gets rectified the following pay period.
