The chances of getting her to cancel the loan are pretty slim I would say. Right now she will be seeing this as a gift from the 'ever-so kind' bank. But I would still try. Other than that she needs to get to the benefits office. She must be entitled to housing benefit or income support on that take home pay.

Can she do some extra work to add to the income, weekend childminding? Bar work? Anything to bring in a bit extra.

Good luck, my heart goes out to her, I hope she sees sense before she ends up in a real nightmare.

I'll see tomorrow what the situation is when I talk to my sis. Hopefully she can claim something. She looks after my neice now and then for a small payment so my sis can carry on with full time work, so that's something I guess.

It's just really sad to think that if she can manage to pay this off, she'll be 25 by the time the loan ends, and she'll have nothing to show for it. I hate being in debt, but my debt has come from the expenses at buying a house as a long term investment, so I know that in a few years all this stress, hassel and saving will be worth it.
    £2 Coin Savings = £0.23:confused:
  • How on earth is she only taking home £600 at the age of 20? That's about £8k a year - surely she must be entitled to some kind of benefits?

minnie i am 20 and my take home (without overtime, tax, national insurance, union taken out and pension taken out) is about £620.00 per month...and no i am not entitled to any benefits.....so i work every day off i am entitled and can be seen doing 9 hour shift days and never having weekends off... this then gives me about £800.00 before stopages, people say why dont you get a better job? well no one with give you a job in a sector with no experience and no one will give you the benifit of the doubt to get that experience..... ah well one day i will take home after stopages £1000.00.... i can dream...cant i

Perhaps you or your sister could take her along to CAB to work out some kind of management plan for this, or at least get some advice from someone impartial - it's often hardest to take advice from those who are close to us.
  • I wonder who thinks people can get by on this???....If I worked MW I would be earning in region of £10/£10.5k PA...how the effing hell are you supposed to pay for everything and still live?

My mate is on MW at the mo...receiving family credits...when 'they' manage to get it right...I do wonder how she does it....of course she is in debt.....and I am now backing off in the hope she will come to her own senses...because by her own admission...she goes deaf and stops listening when I start talking (DFW etc)...I wouldn't mind...I don't even go on.........I don't even have to mention money or ways of getting out of debt.....she apparently knows by the look on my face whether or not I 'approve' of what she's doing?

I do tell her it has !!!!!! all to do with whether I approve of what she is doing at all...she's just got to be happy that she is doing all she can:rolleyes:

    I try not to judge others....because I hate it soooo much myself..and as far as I'm concerned...I'll be my judge..(albeit a lenient one:p )

Let them do it then!!! See how they get on!!! You are quite right about not taking anything to the grave......if you do leave anything (remotely substantial) it will get taxed......again....

On the one hand....save all you can for your pensions (because there will be sod all state pension by the time you get there) and put your money into property etc....but not too uch otherwise it will get taxed to !!!!!!y and your 'dependant' or whoever will be left with nothing more than a bill!

i know ironic isnt it, i am sure they go to the cheapest place to live and calculate it from there living on bread and dripping :rotfl: ah well the joys of having a government... yep its very true even when you are dead you are still getting taxed on  :D

exactly right on the state pension thing, when i tell people (expecially the same age as me) i pay into a pension and have a 'pension' savings account i get the weridest looks, but even if i die before i draw that pension at least i know that if i was living when i am 65/68 i would have had that security  i pity the people who havent thought about it

It's not that I haven't thought about a pension. I worry about it a lot. The trouble was I was never in a position to be able to afford it. First I was a single Mum, then I put myself through Uni as a mature student, then I struggled to buy a house, then I started a business. There was nowhere to start a pension because there was no spare cash. Now it seems at 36 I am too old to make a pension plan worthwhile. So, I have to find an alternative. My hope is obvioiusly I will have a thriving business which will keep me in my old age. But other than that I have to save as much as I can.

That's just awful, Posting. I've been speaking to a friend today who is 22 and just about earns £700 a month - I still think it's a disgrace.

Let's hope the Age Discrimination legislation which comes into force in October sorts this out. There seems to be licence to ridiculously underpay hardworking young people on the grounds of their age.

    Scandalous.
 What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?
