My son has just split up from his girlfriend and has turned up at his mother's house with the intention of living with her "until I get my own place" (SIC).
Two problems: Firstly, he only earns about £600 per month as a junior storeman and my ex is on JSA with housing and CT benefits. He has a car loan of around £160 per month and a commitment to pay £150 per month towards rent at his girlfriend's house as a joint tenent, leaving about £280 PM.
The question is, does she have to declare the "increase" in household income and will she lose her benefits?
I know the first part of the question looks daft...

no help with the benefits sorry, tho i think he should try and get out of the tenency agreement.0 -
I think she has to declare that she now has a non dependent wage earner living with her but someone else will come along and tell you how it effects her benefit as I'm not sure.
The first part of the question was a little confusing but after a while I worked it out

Hello, I work in Housing and Council Tax benefits office assessing claims.
As he is working he will be classed as a non-dependant and therefore non-dependant deductions will have to be taken from her housing and council benefit unfortunately. I can't say for sure how much because it depends on how much he is earning etc, and the calculations are quite complicated (we have a lovely system which works it out for us)
For council tax purposes, if his income is under a certain threshold (can't remember how much but possibly £125-£150 per week) then there may be entitlement to a second adult rebate.
She will also lose her Single Person Discount from the date that he moves in.Debt free since May 20150 -
In response to the JSA etc, it shouldn't affect that, only the Housing Benefit and Council tax BenefitDebt free since May 20150

He has physically moved out but the tenency has another 14 months to run!
I think he's trying to get out of it but she's now saying that he's got to keep a roof over her head!!!
