Blogging and adsense?

Options
Hi,

Just hoping someone can lend me some expertise...

I recently moved out of my Mum's house (in Stoke-on-Trent) to London... i could do with a little extra cash to pay of my credit card debt (the cost of furniture, deposits etc really took it out of me!!) and once that's paid off a little extra money will come in very handy. I used to write content and blogs as a job, mainly about things i knew nothing about (used to lots of research or re-write articles in the news). I currently have a blog as I am an illustrator so i know how to set one up and make it look professional.

What i want to do however is start another blog where i can write about a specific subject, which i could put advertising on - ie Google adsense? I would ask my old boss about this but it might look a bit cheeky as he does this as part of a whole business!!!

My Mum recently lost her job, and she can write as soon as I teach her the basics of posting on blogger/logging in etc she would be fine and it could be a nice little earner for both of us, then once i'm more stable, debts paid of etc i'd probably leave her to it :) She isn't looking to earn loads of money as an income as she only worked part-time (as she is disabled) and is used to it!!

So how much could we potentially earn.. i know it's not instant and takes work and dedication... anyone else tried it? We're not expecting millions haha!!

This is a previous Mse thread, it's quite long and is basically about Affiliate Marketing but there is lots in there about blogging in general and what you can expect from Google adsense.

The thing that puts most people off is that to make money blogging you need patience, persistence and time.

People think that they can just knock out a few blog posts and make some money. Chances are you will make absolutely nothing for your first few months, but during this time you have to keep producing the content and attracting new visitors.

There will always be people that tell you they started making £1000/month as soon as they set up their blog, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

So long as you keep up the routine and don't get disheartened by the lack of visitors for a little while things will come right in the end.
  • I find that i made practically no money from adsense, even when my blog had quite high visits per day.

I personally believe there are better alternatives for you to make some money via the internet than affiliate marketing from Blogs. (too much work for little payback ... there is obviously the exception to the rule).

    1) Online surveys could be a possible alternative - sign up to about 20 different sites to gain regular surveys to complete.
    2) Matched betting is a very realistic opportunity to gain extra income.

I just believe unless you can come up with something really unique it simply won't lift off. But if you are adamant on this I would definitely get some help from that ex-boss you talk of.
    Good Luck.
  • Earning from adsense is pretty much an art in itself - sites with lower traffic can often make more than larger sites, because they're utilising their ad space better.

Have you considered freelance writing? There are many sites where freelancers can offer their work, and sites can advertise looking for freelancers to write articles for their blogs. This takes away the pain of starting up and marketing your blog, and is guaranteed cash, rather than hoping people click your ads.

Some sites are more reputable than others, but a quick google search should help you find some possibilities.
