Difficulty in acquiring a FTB mortgage..

I recently applied for a first time buyer mortgage with the halifax, all appeared well with an agreement in principle and the mortgage broker satisfied that there didnt appear to be any issues. However after a week in application returned as declined due to a default that I had forgotten from 5 years ago. This was 3 payments missed on a loan, where the lender asked for repayment in full which I did.

I am still waiting for a pin for experian to establish exact dates of this default.
Basically does anybody know of a lender that they have had success with in the past that might consider me even with this on my credit file?

I have a 15%/20% deposit.

Constructive feedback welcome

Cheers
