On-Line Divorces

Hi Everyone not sure if this is the right place to put this but has anyone actually applied for a divorce online at all. They are said to be cheaper but do they really work ???

They offer services for less than £200 as long as you do the paperwork etc. I have been apart from my Partner for 4.5 Years and I just want to get the Divorce underway but just cant afford Thousands of ££££.

My own feeling is that High Street Solicitors are not that great and well they have been useless to me in the past with children issues.

Currently fighting Social Services Care Order for my children which I am going to be appealing against but amazingly all the Solicitors in the Area are extremely busy. So if they are too busy to help me with the children i am very reluctant to give them any more business.

Please help if you can any advise gratefully received.

Never been married as I could not afford a divorce, but I'm sure a divorce does not cost £1000s for the proceedure, the aftermath may do though.

(By the way it is in the wrong section, hopefully a mod will hurry along and move it to the correct area).

My divorce was very complicated and took three and a half years (mostly because ex would not fill out paperwork). We have children and one is disabled and will need care for life. As the house has been adapted for our son's needs, this further complicated matters because we can't just live anywhere, and I cannot afford to buy out my ex as I do not work because I care full time for my son. We had to go to court, complete with barristers, three times.

The total cost of my divorce was £5000. I used a local firm from the Thompson Local, which advertised itsself as specilaists in family courts.

Less complex divorces should not cost anywhere near as much as this. You need somebody who specialises in the family courts, so I wouldn't recommend an online or DIY divorce. have you looked slightly further afield, maybe the next town?

If it is not a complicated matter, you can do it yourself through the courts. Look at hmcs website, the court staff are usually okay and tho cannot give legal advice can tell you all the procedure (or should be able to...). Actually, if you are being quoted £200 for you filling in the forms yourself, you might as well take a day off, go down to the court and look helpless at the court staff. I think total fees would come in under £500 unless it went awkward. Some of these can be reduce - I think please check - if you are on certain benefits.

If there are complications then the online service is not for you - they can best deal with straightforward ones. Ask for recommendations, or ask the Law Society for recommendations for firms that have Family Law Specialists, and firms are better than sole practitioners (usually - not always!) because there are ways to complain and they should explain them to you.

If your ex is being a PITA then wait another six montyhs - after 5 years there are no grounds for opposing divorce tho they can still be an armpit about money/children etc. Good luck

Many Thanks to all that have replied and I like the idea of filling in the forms in about 6 months time down at the Local Court and look helpless - I like that idea I think something my Dad said when he was alive. "Let everybody think you are dumb and then one day you may surprise someone" Sadly missed but not forgotten .
