Steward at Football Matches, Events etc

Just wondered if anybody had any info on this - being based close to Birmingham there is obviously Aston Villa, Birmingham City, the NIA, the NEC, the LG etc which require stewards!

Just wondered in general if anyone had any experience, and who to contact - big stewarding companies etc.

Don't forget the cricket grounds as they would probably need stewards from 10am to around 7pm as play is generally 11am to 6pm, and a test match can be up to 5 days. Much more earning potential than a 90 minute football match :) Even at minimum wage it wouldn't be too bad, just be aware you'll be out in the elements all day even if it is blisteringly hot or freezing cold. They would stop play for rain though so you'd probably get some cover then. Cricket stewards usually face the crowd not the play which may be a good or bad thing depending on your view of the game :)

Goldrange provide stewards and SIA staff at West Bromwich Albion and Wolves.
They sub some of the SIA work out to Safetynet Security in Brum.

Showsec provide the stewards and SIA at the O2 Academy in Brum - they are recruiting at the moment. Also, lots of casual event work coming up with them through the festival season.

The NEC/NIA employ directly stewards/SIA directly - but they have a very strict 10 year work history policy due to the location.

  • I used to steward at Anfield for the LFC games.

I just wrote a letter direct to the stadium telling them I was interested in stewarding and could I be considered for their next phase of recruitment.

Got a phonecall about a week later inviting me for an induction. Pretty strightforward. I did it for about 2 years, but it just became too much as they ask you to be there 3 hours before kick off and often you are there an hour after the game. for this you get a match fee of £26. That's 6 hours work for £26. When you're working full time and you've got an early kick off on the saturday and the a midweek match it can become a bit much.

There were people who had been there for years though and loved it. My advice is just write a letter addressed to 'Head of Stewarding/Security" to the stadium you wish to steward at.

I sold programmes at my local stadium. The company I did it for also does games at Twickenham and other events.

I started 6 years ago and still do it for big events now.

Football and Rugby games I would get about £25-£35 from working 12-5. Bigger events such as Twickenham I would be working the whole day and get £50-£60.

Used to work for ShowSec International until I moved out of the area. They do events all over the country and internationally. I loved working for them and spent a lot of evenings and weekends working concerts, football matches, cricket matches and the occassional festival :) Paid just above minimum wage but was fun and you could work when you wanted.
Have also worked football matches for the clubs themselves - smaller clubs generally organise their own stewarding, bigger clubs often contract out. I enjoyed it and saw lots of things but you have to remember that it is often boring work with you stuck on a fire exit unable to see anything - though if it all goes wrong, you're there to make it better :)
