I am trying to lose weight but find that 'unhealthy' food is always cheaper or has bargain status (eg bogof on biscuits and fizzy drinks).

It would be great to compile a list of current offers or cheap low fat finds in the supermarkets to help all the dieters on the forum.

We have an OS thread here on recipes and support to lose weight :) As this is more of a shopping thread, I'll move it to the Grocery Shopping Board.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Forget low fat, its all a con, they replace the fat with sugar or sweetners, both not good for you. Fat does not make you fat.

If you want to stay full then eat protein for breakfast, and lunch and tea, lots of lovely veg, some good fats, and the weight will drop off. Don't be suckered in by all these 'diet' 'good for you' products.

The human body is a machine, if you shovel in more fuel (food) than you need, you will gain weight - that is all there is to it. Unless you have an underlying medical cause - which the vast majority of people don't.

The best way to measure fuel is by "counting" calories. forget all about low-fat diet, grapefruit diet, cucumber diet, etc, etc - just shovel in fewer calories !!!

I was 15st 12lbs at the start of last year, I am now steady at 13st (have been for about 5 months). Even during the dieting I ate well, didn't feel hungry (much!). I still eat what I like, not fad food. For example, I not only still have full cream milk on my Shredded Wheat - but Jersey full cream milk. The difference in calories is peanuts - now, THEY are heavy in calories.
An adult man should consume 2500 cals per day - I cut down to 1500, most days I was below that. I didn't weigh and measure every mouthful, after I while I just knew how much, of what, I could eat.
I eat lots of fresh fruit and veg - yes, it does cost more than eating "junk", but if it makes me feel better and live longer - worth every penny !

A couple of days ago in Iceland I could barely keep a straight face at the lady behind me in the queue;
She unloaded a huge 4 cheese pizza, chocolate coated peanuts, toffee coated popcorn, a pack of chocolate bars and 2 large bottles of (non diet) Pepsi - and a litre of semi-skimmed milk ! I suppose she thought the milk would counteract the 8 zillion calories in the rest of her shopping.

There is one HUGE problem with losing weight - it cost me a fortune in new clothes, only my shoes and socks still fitted me.

But I feel so, so much better for it !

Well done on your fab weight loss.

I actually prefer skimmed milk, I hate semi or full fat in tea, I can't drink it. I also prefer diet coke/pepsi, I find normal syrupy.

.
sounds like my dads diet , and hes thin as a rake !! i agree, although and wrongly healthier foods are dearer than the cheap to produce junk food, adopting a more old fashioned stye of shopping ie utilising local butchers, greengrocers or even growing my own veg has helped me keep the costs down, but i must say places like lidl are a godsend, and i think there fruit and veg is excellent qaulity too

also tins of kidney beans are usually around 20p, cheaper and healthier but just as convienent as the usual baked beans:j

I agree all round. Since I started planning and doing the grocery challenge I've lost two stone quite painlessly :j:j:j

However I too get annoyed when all the specials are for sugary cereal, various cakes, squash and crisps. Maman is right though, buying carefully allows good bargains on fresh, untampered-with meat (I like to do my own tampering :rotfl:) and fresh fruit and veg in season.

It often seems as if junk food is cheap, but a diet of crisps and chicken dippers does not satisfy for long, and most ready meals can be made cheaper from scratch.

yes quite agree with all you say and i hope to also lose weight!

shopping on markets at end of the day can yield great bargains on veg stalls, mine does dog bowls full for a quid (I've had 26 bananas!) at the end of the day it's bogof!

also large packs pasta/rice etc cost hardly anything.

i also look out n whatever shop I'm in for the reduced areas which i plan tea/lunch etc around but have had some odd concoctions! at end of day ,milk/bread usually sold off too which is fine for a day or too.

thanks all for tips and chat!
