i'll try to keep this brief, while hopefully making sense!

my husband works for a large national company. where he is based there are 10 people doing the same job, 5 based in the yard and 5 'mobiles'
the yard worker do four 12 hour shifts followed by 4 rest days. the other 5 all work 37 hours a week on a 7 day roster. they work 5 out of 7 days.
the 'mobiles work has really dried up in the past year but it 'should' pick up, its a waiting game.

the company decided that 2 of the 'mobiles should cover the 'rest days' of the yard. so they didn't have to pay the yard workers any overtime. they didn't ask for volunteers, they just picked 2 of the 5.

the 2 workers covering the yard are also still doing mobile jobs.
the problem is, the other 3 mobiles arent managing to get their 37 hours, sometimes working as few as 15 hours per week. in the last 9 months none of the mobile workers has actually worked their 37 hours.

the 2 that were put in the yard are working anything upto 60 hours per week,. this month one of them worked 212 hours (66 hours overtime) while one of the mobiles only worked 75 out of his 148 contracted hours.

now the company are saying that theyre either going to make one of the mobiles redundant or cut them all to 30 hours per week.

yet they are giving the 2 in the yard mobile jobs too and paying them overtime while the other 3 are struggling to make hours!

my husband talked to the union and was told to talk to his immediate boss and if he got no joy to go to the 'next boss up'

his immediate boss only said 'yes i know' amd walked off, and the boss above him said 'you know what to do if you dont like it!'

any advice appreciated.

    Its complicated isn't it!

If there is a Union there and it has enough members then the management has to consult with them about redundancies, I would suggest your husband points this out to his Union rep (and if he won't listen the Branch Secretary or Convenor, contact details should be on a noticeboard) as they will need this information if they have to go into talks.

As for "you know what you can do if you don't like it" there is no likelier phrase to wind the average Union rep up. Your husband is not this companies slave, he gives his time and labour for a wage and, as with any contract, deserves respect
