I wonder if someone could advise us if there is anything that we could do. My husband was made redundant last june he applied for several jobs then got an interview for a job which was advertised through the job centre they offered him the job the following week asking him to go training in wales which is 4hrs away he had set off to go training and they rang to say go back here had been a problem with a part that they need for training so they said that it would be two wks later that date never came. Then they said that it would be november that didnt happen then they wrote to him saying that it would be january during this time he had been sent a shirt what he would be wearing for training, then they said it would be march then before end of may he has had two letters from them during this time stating the dates etc, when ever he rings them they say that they will ring him to let him know whats happening but they dont. We feel as though they have wasted 8mths of his time so now our motgage insurance runs out in 4wks he has also turned two jobs down whilst waiting to start. They just dont understand my husband has stated this to them and they dont realise the stress they have caused us.Obviosly now my husband is applying for other jobs but if they had not led him on he would be in work by now.

Thanks

Don't put all your eggs in the same basket comes to mind.

Whilst I do appreciate the difficult financial situation you were in, alarm bells should have started ringing when this company were messing your husband about.

Unfortunately there isn't any legal recourse to this issue, he should just pursue other employment options and forget about it.

Just get another job. Don't inform these people either, not even if they give you a date.

Whatever possessed him to turn down other jobs after they started mucking around like this?

An offer of work constitutes a contract even if its not in writing. This employer has broken the contract and you may have a claim in the County Court against them. Ring the ACAS helpline for advice.

I would give this job offer up as lost cause. Feel free to 'name and shame' the company involved.

Thanks for your replys, my husband was offered the other two jobs at around the same time as as this job he has been waiting to start, he decided to take this one as it is a job that he enjoys doing the most. Its been a really awkward situation he has had letters saying thankyou for your patience etc and once this project takes off he will reap the awards and benefits so in his mind hes been thinking every week he will be starting with them he,s emailled them twice in the last couple of weeks and had no reply. Also we know that they set a woman on as the laision officer to deal with this job and now she no longer works for them. It seems a reputable company but it is unbelievable how my husband is being treated. He has been aplying for other jobs but nothings happening its so frustrating.

so sorry to hear this, some of these people really are heartless. i recently got offered a call center job and passed the interview and was told would have the training day on a certain date...which was eventually postponed twice by a month. Training day finally came and i was ecstatic, there was ten of us, we spent a whole day from 8am to 4pm being trained on the organisation and the job description/duties then had some role play. At 4pm they said it was time to decide who goes and who stays, we were all in shock:eek: Because we were all given the impression from the phone interview that we had been already hired. I was mad as ever because i wasn't put through ! It was such a waste of my time, energy and resources and completely misleading and unethical on their part.

    Thats nasty.

A whole day is a long time to spend having a second interview (ie a lot of time potentially wasted if one doesnt get the job!). I would expect a job interview to be over and done with in under an hour. I can certainly understand you feeling "I've HAD the interview - we did it over the phone" - so it was nasty of the firm not to make it plain that it was a second interview, rather than actually being training (as they had stated it was).

Its been years since I last had a job interview - back in my day there was no such thing as phone interviews (leastways there might have been - but only for very casual/unskilled type work - so I never encountered them). I guess thats the thing - I would have wondered "How come they only seem to have 'interviewed' me over the phone? How are they supposed to check out if I am presentable and suss out my non-verbal language to see if I look honest, etc when they haven't actually seen me in person?" - so might have felt a bit suspicious that I had apparently been given the job without a physical interview (even if they called it "training" and said it was to last for a day).
