I've got a similar problem but nothing to do with the words...my OH is a muso and knows a lot of classical music. Never been my scene but he's gradually winning me round and we like the idea of just instrumental piece during the signing of the register. There are several pieces that were just written as musical pieces but have subsequently been 'hijacked' by the hymn writers...basically a lot of the older hymns were really just words put to existing tunes. So now the music is more known as hymn music when really the music itself isn't religious. So is it the words they have a problem or any link to anything that may be considered religious?

Ave Maria is a prime example (both of them)!
You could just try putting the original title and composer on your list and it may 'sneak' through but unfortunately registrars tend to go with the better know option which is usually the hymn so won't allow! All you can do is ask and fight your corner, hopefully you'll have an understanding registrar.
