Harrassing phone calls

Have just read my last post. It has read that dad and I argue, infact was hubby and I. Thought I had better put the record straight!!
  • I can now recognise most of the harassing call numbers as we have Caller ID (a godsend!) and they are usually a 0870 number, in which case I just don't answer them. Therefore it's not a problem with friends and family getting through as I can see their number & will happily answer those!

Yes Dad knows about everything and thinks I am doing the right thing. It's just he is getting quite irritated with these calls now as he's been putting up with them for weeks, as have I.

I'll see how it goes tomorrow and what my frame of mind is like, as to whether I shall answer them or not. Right now I am so furious about them calling on a Sunday and also sneaking about with my dad - that I am not in the mood to deal with them!

  • Thanks guys for your thoughts and suggestions.

Ideally I would like to just ignore the calls and hold out for the next 10 days. I just ignore the calls to my mobile, but it's the calls to the landline that are a problem. As mentioned, I live with my dad and he is starting to get really p**sed off with it now. Saturday morning, the first one started at 8.01am! Dad was in bed and was annoyed! I've been out all day today (Sunday) and he's had loads of calls. On a Sunday!

If I lived on my own, I'd just unplug the phone - but can't do that here, I have to consider my dad's feelings. It's his house and his 'phone!

I cannot wait until 30th - when I can then answer any irritating calls with "I am bankrupt so kindly do not phone me. Goodbye" ....then hang up. Hahaha!

Sorry to but in. However by law if you state you are bankrupt to a creditor then you have to provide them with full bankruptcy details so best thing to do is once you go bankrupt call every creditor and advise them of your details

Could try a little white lie, someone else answer phone, say you don't own that number any more and tell them to stop calling or they'll call police about harrassment, know someone who has done that and it worked. Seeing as it's your Dad's phone he could complain, inc put it in writing.
One day I might be more organised...........

  • I really feel for you. These calls are the last thing you need at the moment.
Many people on this site have experienced similar events with calls from early morning until late in the evening. I am currently with Payplan and they have told me that debtors numbers are continuously on a dailing system. There is nothing personal, but you will receive frequent calls from some 'oik' who knows nothing about you or your circumstances, and may by chance be lucky enough to catch you unawares. Your best bet is to continue to not answer callls. You may need to unburden your self to your nearest and dearest. My children are quite enjoying telling the call centres that my dad is unavailable until fruther notice as they seem to be deaf to my conversations about by DMP:mad:

I've got some bad news for you....

Even after you're bankrupt, the phone calls won't stop. Even if you fax/mail them the official paperwork, they will still call. It can take a few months for them to get it through their heads that you're bankrupt and to stop calling. Most of them, I think, simply don't have their databases updated very well... you can tell the main office that you're bankrupt, but they don't tell the person who administrates the database. You can tell them when they call you, and they may or may not even note what you're saying in your file. They will probably assume you're just making it up and their only concern is moving on to the next phone number on the list - not correcting their records. Then, there are a few unscrupulous ones who might actually try to pressure you to pay. It's illegal for you to pay them, but they don't care - they may try it.

I'm not sure that I've ever heard any easy way to make them stop calling. :(

The way we have been told to do it at our DCA is get bankruptcy number, the court, date and OR name and contact details. Then we refer it to the manager and most of the time thats the last we hear of them. However sometimes people only get snippets of bankruptcy information therefore we have to make ANOTHER call or letter getting the 'debtor' to contact us.

Just a thought and I don't know how practical this is or how much it costs but I think that you can get a second 'number' on the same line. It rings differently so you can have one for you and one for the kids/your business calls (Or whatever).
I know it would be a little bit of a hassle but you could get a second number and give it to your/your dad's friends and then set the answer phone for all the rest...

Get the BT service which bars all withheld numbers and stops the phone from ringing - just have it for 3 months whilst you get through this period and don't give any of them card details. The reason they ring is to force this out of you
  • The majority of numbers are 0870 so I can usually tell which are the pestering calls or not. I don't ever answer witheld numbers anyway and never have done - if they want to speak to me or if it is important they can leave a message or ring my mobile. Anyway, most of the time witheld numbers are pesky sales calls!

Anyway I have had a piece of news today which has cheered me up in some way. The ex (you know - the conman, fraudster, scumbag etc etc) has been served his sentence from his recent court hearing (not for crimes against me but because of ripping off his ex landlady and also a letting agency). He has been given a 2 year suspended sentence and ordered to pay £2000 compensation.

I'm pleased for her getting her justice but has made me angry that nothing has been done about my case. I'm going to crack on and get onto the police about this. Anyway it's all good fodder for me for my bankruptcy, i.e. when I have my interview with the official receiver I can give them this news and hopefully add credence to my story that I have been swizzled.
